The Watch

Here we have an Unworn Bulova American Clipper Automatic 96A242 with a 39mm polished stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist with angular lugs and a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 12.6mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Its design aesthetic is a contemporary interpretation of their Bulova “Clipper” watches from the 1950s. On the right, a domed push/pull signed crown. The polished smooth bezel holds a domed mineral crystal above a dark blue sunburst dial, an outer minute track has lume plots at the hour, applied polished dagger and Arabic numeral indices marking the hours. Dauphine's hands infilled with luminance complemented by a steel tapered second-hand completes this attractive vintage-inspired dress watch, at 12 o’clock we have the applied Bulova motif and at 6 o’clock “Selfwinding” which is a nod to their 1950s watches. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back, inside an Automatic Miyota movement with a skeletonised rotor. The watch comes paired with a 20mm leather strap with a signed polished buckle and the watch comes with its Bulova presentation box, unsigned paperwork and swing tag.

Personal Note

When I think of Bulova I think of the incredible designs and cases they were producing in the 1950s, so this is a real gem among the Bulova lineup! The case and lugs are what instantly drew me, definitely take a look at the photos, they remind me of the old "Spider" lugs as we would call them. For the money, you truly cannot go wrong.

The Brand

Bulova Company was founded in 1875 by Joseph Bulova. Based in New York, they moved to 580 Fifth Avenue in 1920. In 1923 Bulova Watch Inc was introduced. 1927, on the rooftop of 580 Fifth Avenue, he set up an observatory to be able to determine the universal time precisely. In 1941, Joseph Bulova decided to increase his company's reach by utilising television advertising, producing the world’s first television advert, it was the first time that commercial advertising was allowed on US television. He developed standardised watch production and was the first to create a fully electronic watch using tuning-fork technology. Bulova has collaborated with many people and organisations including Lindbergh and NASA. During the very first moonwalk, a Bulova timer was placed in the sea of tranquillity. The company was bought by Japan’s Citizen Watch Company in 2008.
