The Watch

Here we have an Unworn 2023 Nivada Chronoking Mecaquartz Limited to 100 with a 38.5mm brushed and polished stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with tapered flat-ended drilled lugs, a bevel edge flows along its flanks to a lug-to-lug length of 47mm and a case thickness of 13mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. Taking its design cues from the legendary Chronoking of their past, they have added a pleasing modern contemporary flare. Down the right side, we have the polished piston-style chronograph pushers and a large signed crown in the centre. A bidirectional bezel has a black aluminium insert with a silver 60-minute dive scale holding a double-domed sapphire crystal, in keeping with its vintage aesthetic, reminding us of the domed acrylic crystals of the past, above a matte black dial. An outer Tachymeter scale above the precisely executed minute track surrounds baton indexes coated in cream Super-LumiNova marking the hours, at 3 o’clock  24-hour register, at 6 o’clock continuous seconds register and finally at 9 o’clock a 60-minute register, each in cream, a nice contrast to the black dial, slender baton hands tipped with Super-LumiNova are complemented by a tapered red chronograph hand matching the stick hands found on the two registers. At 12 o’clock we have the Nivada motif and “Chronoking” printed underneath completing this vintage-inspired sports chronograph. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the details of the watch around its edge and the Nivada Grenchen motif in the centre, inside Meca-Quartz Seiko VK63 this mechanical quartz hybrid has a tuning fork-type quartz crystal, you get the same kind of mechanical resistance when you engage the pushers and a satisfying snap back of the chronograph seconds hand on reset. The watch comes paired with its 20mm leather strap with a signed pin buckle, and the watch comes with its Nivada presentation box, swing tag and paperwork.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate to have purchased and sold many Nivada watches, from vintage to modern and all have been snapped up by passionate collectors! So this Chronoking with strong inspiration from the legendary Paul Newman Daytona and other watches of that period has been a clear winner.

The Brand

Nivada was founded in Grenchen Switzerland as early as 1879, but officially 1926 appears to be its foundation as in 1976 they celebrated their 50th anniversary. In 1939, Nivada built up a business deal with the New York-based Croton Watch Company to enable them to import and distribute Nivada watches within the US. This successful partnership would last for many years. Nivada Grenchen was imported and sold in the US under a number of different brand names such as Croton Nivada, Croton Nivada Grenchen, and Croton. During the 1960s and 70s, they were not allowed to use their Nivada name in the USA due to its phonetically sounding similar to Movado, so they used Nivada Grenchen instead. In 2018, two entrepreneurs in watchmaking, Guillaume Laidet, and Remi Chabrat, decided to revive the Nivada brand with its original legacy and in 2019 they obtained the licence to use the Nivada Grenchen copyright.
