The Watch

Here we have an Unworn 2022 Seiko 5 Sports Green Camo Dial SRPJ37 part of the revamped Seiko 5 Street Style series of watches, the 42mm stainless steel case is coated in a polished black Seiko proprietary hardened coating making it resistant to scratches, and it subtly curves over your wrist with a crisp edge leading to tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13.3mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. Seiko gets wrist ergonomics so right ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side at 4 o’clock a crown is protected by the case shape which acts as a crown guard. The unidirectional bezel has a double row of knurling for extra grip with a black dive insert and silver-coloured numerals, holding a flat Hardlex crystal above a black and military green-toned camouflage dial, this street fashion design is commonly seen worn by skateboarders around the world. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds the applied disc and rounded baton indexes coated in LumiBrite mark the hours, at 3 o’clock a day/date window, Steel sword and arrow hands infilled with LumiBrite complemented by a white lollipop counterweighted tapered sweeping second-hand complete this dynamic street-military themed watch. At 12 o’clock we have the Seiko motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” in a flowing script. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 4R36, 24 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, it has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes paired with a 22mm Seiko black Nylon strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Seiko presentation box, signed card and swing tag.

Personal Note

It feels like Seiko has turned a corner with its design and isn't afraid to push the limits and enjoy itself with what they are making, this is the perfect example of that. I do wonder if Seiko has been watching the collecting community go crazy with their watches and modding them out, saw that there is clearly a market for it and decided to give it a try themselves, either way, I'm here for it!

The Brand

Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
