The Watch
Breitling was established in 1884 by Leon Breitling in the Swiss Jura Mountains, in 1915 Gaston Breitling introduced a pusher at 2 o’clock to start, stop and reset the chronograph, Leon later moved the reset to a pusher at 4 o’clock. In 1939 Breitling shipped a huge quantity of chronographs to the Royal Air Force, during the war with Germany surrounding Switzerland Leon and some friends created a makeshift runway near their factory. Planes would use the car's headlights as a guide to land, once on the ground, they were quickly loaded, taking off before the Germans knew what was going on. They introduced the “Navitimer” a navigation computer in 1952 used to calculate a flight plan. In 1969 they collaborated with Heuer, Burne, and Dubois-Depraz on a top-secret project called Project 99, together they developed one of the first self-winding chronograph movements. Breitling stands for high precision, outstanding performance, and functionality. During the early days of space exploration, Lt. Commander Scott Carpenter went around the earth three times whilst wearing a modified Navitimer. In 2017 they were sold to CVC Capital Partners, Europe's largest private equity firm.
Here we have an Unworn 2022 Breitling Superocean with a 44mm stainless steel case, a subtle curve of the case leads to a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence, inspired by the dive watches of the 1960s with their simplicity in design and function. Polished and brushed surfaces transition with bevel edges, on the right side, is a signed screw-down twin gasket crown protected by crown guards. The unidirectional bezel has a vibrant green ceramic dive insert with deeply engraved numerals, and a bevel-edged sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides sits above a dark green dial. An outer white minute chapter ring has a wide slope drawing the eye towards the centre green dial, applied baton indexes are steel framed and infilled with Super-LumiNova marking the hours. A wide sword hand and square-tipped minute hand are infilled with Super-LumiNova complemented by an orange-tipped sweeping second hand, the dial is perfectly balanced and highly legible with the Breitling motif at 12 o’clock and the “SuperOcean” Chronometer 300m/1000ft at 6 o’clock. On the reverse is a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Breitling Cal. 17, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. This Chronometer Certified movement has a base of the ETA 2824-2, the bi-directional rotor adds efficiency and accuracy with hacking and hand winding for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on its Breitling 22mm stainless steel polished and brushed bracelet with a push-button release signed folding clasp and comes with its Breitling presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
The perfect opportunity to pick this beast up and save yourself a nice chunk on retail! The design is fantastic and the use of green against the bold inner bezel really adds a wonderful contrast on and off the wrist, plus those hands are truly great and add a vintage appeal to such a modern watch. The bracelet is built like a tank, as you'd expect from Breitling, but as you'd also expect, the watch is a strap monster and looks fantastic on all sorts!
