The Watch

Since 2016 Hodinkee has worked with Swatch to create fun and affordable pieces, highlighting Swatch Group's involvement in the revival of the Swiss watch industry. Swatch Sistem51 Hodinkee Vintage 84 SUTZ402 reflects their second collection released in Spring 1984. It was their first true sports watch design. At this time, Swatch could be seen on many teenagers ‘/young adults' wrists with the likes of The Serpent, The Emerald Diver, The Classic, Vasily.  With this in mind, Hodinkee worked with Swatch to create their interpretation. Using Spring 1984 as their base, they used the black translucent case.  A much more prominent bezel is used. The domed crystal sits above a sunburst silver dial. Reminiscent of the Sector dials of the past. Outer minute track, lumed circles, and lume coated rectangles and triangles inside a black ring to indicate the hours. Slim baton hands and a date window at 3 o’clock.  The red dots on the dial indicate the positions of the Jewels in the movement. On the reverse of the hermetically sealed case, you find Automatic Swatch Sistem51, which caused a storm at Baselworld back in 2013. It is completely machine built and uses a streamlined 51 component movement, an interesting bi-directional peripheral rotor in black along with black & grey with interlocking “H” detailing across the backplate. 19 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour. It has an incredible 90-hour power reserve. The watch comes fitted on a Swatch integrated 23mm black silicone strap.

Personal Note

The Swatch Sistem51 has been a marvel since its creation, made entirely by machines and utilising only 51 components in its automatic movement, how incredible? Some models have become very collectible and yet are still incredibly affordable in this mad world of watches we participate in, why not start your Swatch collection today?
