The Watch
Here we have a Sinn x The Rake & Revolution 155 Bundeswehr "Dark Star", issued in a limited run of 150 pieces, it's the rarest of the 3 re-editions produced, made in collaboration with Revolution and Rake magazines, designed for military pilots of the West German Federal Defense Force (Bundeswehr). They were initially made by a company called Leonidas, which was later purchased by Heuer. Its 43mm stainless steel round case is bead-blasted with drilled lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 51mm and a case thickness of 15mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. The bezel with its 60-minute scale has a “ghost” effect giving the appearance of a watch faded by the sun over time, a flat acrylic crystal sits above a matte black dial. An inner 60-minute track and large Arabic numeral indexes coated in specially coloured Super Luminova to perfectly emulate the look of aged tritium seen on vintage watches, at 3 o’clock the 30-minute register and at 9 o’clock the continuous 60 seconds register. Broad syringe hands and a chronograph hand are coated in the same vintage colour Super Luminova, at 6 o’clock you find a "DarkStar" in place of the original 3H logo. On the reverse a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Cal. SW 510, 27 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. Cam-operated chronographs. The watch comes fitted on its Sinn 20mm Bundeswehr strap with a signed buckle plus an additional Sinn NATO strap included, and the watch comes with its Sinn presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
This is a fantastic collaboration between Sinn and The Rake / Revolution to create a truly incredible-looking, vintage-inspired, chronograph! Sinn knows what they are doing when it comes to watch manufacturing and design, the build quality is bulletproof and the way the watch looks on the wrist, whilst definitely on the larger side, is incredible and wears so well.
The Brand
In 1961 the pilot and flight instructor Helmet Sinn founded the Sinn watch company in Frankfurt am Main. Principally making watches that gave the user maximum functionality at a reasonable price. His Pilot watches became popular with his fellow pilots as they appreciated their build quality and precision. In 1985, Professor Dr Reinhard Furrer, a German physicist, can be seen wearing the 140 S model on his wrist during the D-1 space lab mission. They continued their exploration of space with the 142 S in 1992. This watch was worn by Dietrich Flade during the Mir-92 mission. Later in 1993, the 142 space chronograph went on the second German Spacelab mission, the D-2. The mission was in space for 10 days, orbiting the Earth 160 times whilst onboard the NASA Space Shuttle, Colombia. Sinn was bought by Lothar Schmidt an engineer in 1994 renaming the company ‘Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH’. Over the years Schmidt used his engineering background to develop Ar-dehumidifying technology which is resistant to temperature. In 2011 they celebrated their 50th anniversary.
