The Watch
Here we have an unworn and factory-sealed 2020 Zenith El Primero Chronomaster C.01 Collective Edition, sold exclusively to members of the Collective Horology Collectors Club, an international group of enthusiasts based in Silicon Valley California, and is limited to just 50 pieces. The 38mm brushed and polished stainless steel case curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, and polished bevel edges that lead to a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of 14mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the piston-style chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the center. A polished smooth bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a crisp white and grey dynamic dial, a white Tachymeter sits above a grey 60-minute chapter ring precisely executed with chamfer-edged baton indexes marking the hours, three touching grey subdials consist of a 30-minute register, 12-hour register and a small seconds register, slender baton hands have a line of Super LumiNova and a unique Rhodium-plated tapered chronograph hand has the characteristic Zenith star counterweight, at 12 o’clock we have the applied Zenith star and Zenith El Primero printed underneath completing this exclusive chronograph. On the reverse a screwed-down exhibition case back with sapphire crystal, inside an automatic Zenith El. Primero Cal. 4061, 31 jewels, beating at 36,000 beats per hour, this movement has a base of the Zenith El Primero 400 and is made up of 282 components including a Silicon escape wheel, lever, and a skeletonised signed rotor. The watch comes paired with three Zenith 19mm straps including both a deployment clasp and pin buckle and is sold with its original Zenith box and Zenith paperwork.
Personal Note
There's something oddly alluring about having a factory-sealed watch, knowing you can be THE very first person to cut it open and put it on! But presenting and photographing a sealed watch is no easy task, so I have stolen some photos from Collective/Zenith so you can see just how incredible this limited edition of just 50 watches is! I'd suggest snapping this one up if you're interested as I suspect it to be the only one left fully sealed of the 50!
The Brand
Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famously Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements. Their most recognised movement is the El Primero; it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975, and was re-issued in 1986. Zenith was later sold to the Swatch Group in November 1999.
