The Watch
MKll was founded in 2002 by Bill Yao. Born and raised in the US he graduated from University. On leaving he went into banking, it was here that his love for watches was rekindled. In 2001 he went back to education to get his M.B.A. He was the first company to offer customisation and parts for other makers watches such as Luminox and the Seiko diver series. Building on this success the company soon evolved specialising in custom Japanese and Swiss-made watches under the MKll brand. MKll as a trademark represents their dedication to utilitarianism, reliability, and timeless styling.
The MKll Kingston is limited to 300 pieces, it is a homage to the Rolex 6538 that was first introduced in 1955 and was famously worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in the 1962 film Dr. No. It's 39mm stainless steel case is satin and mirror polished. Its distinctive oyster shape with a lug to lug length of 48mm for a very comfortable fit. On the right-hand side a large screw-down crown making adjustment a breeze. The 60 clicks unidirectional dive bezel has an aluminum insert marked with 60-minute numerals. The double-domed sapphire crystal with AR coating sits above the black dial. An outer minute track along with gilt-edged batons and discs mark the hours filled with SuperLumiNova BGW9. Mercedes hands filled with the same lume are complimented with a sweeping center seconds hand with lollipop counterbalance. On the reverse a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic ETA 2836-2 25 Jewels 28,800 Beats per hour. It has a highly decorated rotor and bridges with Côtes de Genève finishing. Fitted on a 20 mm satin-finished stainless steel bracelet with a signed clasp.
Personal Note
MKII has developed an incredible following in such a short time and these Kingston models have continued to grow in popularity and price year on year, how far could it go? I often think of the Gevril Tribeca "Paul Newman" homage which has also continued to grow as the original "Paul Newman" it is paying homage to have continued to grow also. I don't see why this MKII can't follow suit, it is built incredibly well and looks fantastic!
