The Watch

In 1892 Hamilton was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and began producing pocket watches. Their focus has always been to make accurate affordable timepieces. In 1914, they became an official supplier to the U.S. Armed Forces during WWI, they shifted production from pocket watches to the more convenient wristwatch. In 1926 Admiral Richard E. Byrd became the first aviator to reach the North Pole, circling it for 13 minutes before returning to base. He timed this pioneering 15 hours and 57-minute flight with a Hamilton watch. As soon as America joined the Allied forces in World War 2 they stopped producing watches for consumers to focus on the enormous task of supplying the U.S. Armed Forces. They produced over one million timepieces including wristwatches and marine chronometers, even earning an Army-Navy E award for excellence in manufacturing. On May 16, 1974, Hamilton was sold to SSIH, which is the previous name of what is now the Swatch Group. They remained in the US until 2003 when they transferred their operation to  Biel, Switzerland. From this date forward they were able to put on their dials Swiss made.

The Khaki X-Wind features the very first drift angle calculator to be put on a watch, it allows pilots to accurately calculate how crosswinds will affect their journey. Our Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind has a 44mm stainless steel case. Polished sides and satin-brushed tops. The lugs are contoured to a taper with a lug to lug length of 55mm and a thickness of 16mm, the watch has an impressive wrist presence. The watch has 3 crowns and 2 pushers, the screw-down crowns on the right side are used to adjust the internal bezels for calculating the crosswind. On the left side, you find the chronograph pushers and the screw-down crown for adjusting the time and date. Each crown has deep knurling and the letter “H”. The stainless steel bi-directional bezel has its scale in black and is friction fitted for a smooth action when turning. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a matte black dial. 2 bezels are operated separately, the top bezel is adjusted with the lower crown, the second bezel is adjusted with the upper crown and is precisely marked. Applied brushed steel numerals mark the hours. Unusually the movement is rotated 180' degrees. At 12 o’clock a 12-hour register, at 3 o’clock a continuous 60 seconds register and at 6 o’clock a 30-minute register. The 12 and 6 registers are silver contrasting nicely with the matte black. At 9 o’clock a day/date window. Elegant syringe hands are lume filled, adding a vintage feel to the tool watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with a half-circle of sapphire crystal showing the movement the other half has degrees and angles engraved into it. Inside an  Automatic Hamilton Cal. H-21, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. A modified Valjoux 7750. The watch comes fitted on a Hamilton 22mm tan leather strap with rivets and a signed buckle
