The Watch
FORTIS was founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt their headquarters and factory is based in Grenchen Switzerland. In 1926 Walter joined forces with the inventor of the automatic movement John Harwood to mass-produce the world's first automatic watch. In 1962 Rolf Vogt, son of the founder, hands over to NASA the Spacematic AR (All Risks) designed by FORTIS. 2003 saw the introduction of the official Cosmonaut Chronograph which is still worn today as official equipment by Russian Cosmonauts, very much like the Omega Speedmaster Professional is still the official NASA watch.
FORTIS and Skydive Switzerland have created the FORTIS Airbase, a dropzone for all skydiving enthusiasts, situated within the scenic Swiss and French mountains of the famous Matterhorn or Mont Blanc.
Our Fortis Sky-Watch Sky Diving was designed to be worn when skydiving. It has a 55mm round case made of plastic. Straight lugs with a lug to lug length of 65mm and a thickness of 10.5mm gives the watch impressive wrist presence. A flat mineral crystal sits above a bright yellow dial. Large Arabic numerals mark the hours with an inner crescent marking 15 to 45 seconds which is very important, as soon as you leave the plane at 4000m or 13000ft you have a few seconds of freefall reaching approximately 120 miles per hour, a real thrill rush, then at 45 seconds, you have to pull your parachute. After roughly 5 to 7 minutes under the parachute canopy, you land. Bright orange baton hands with a yellow seconds hand give the watch a unique dial arrangement. On the reverse, a snap-off case back. Inside a Swiss quartz movement. The watch comes fitted on a white 27mm strap and its original FORTIS white strap to wear over your flight suit with Sky-Watch on the side.
Personal Note
When this watch came across my desk I had no choice but to buy it and offer it for sale, how funky and cool is this? In a world of watches that we all take so seriously, this feels like an unusual bit of fun and I'm all for that! Is it practical? Maybe when skydiving, but other than that, absolutely not! And that is ok...
