The Watch

Here we have a Citizen Promaster Professional Diver EcoZilla BJ8050-08E with a 48mm polished stainless steel case, its dynamic stepped construction sits on your wrist like a cushion. The lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 18mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence, at 9 o’clock we have a screw-down crown protected by crown guards. This unidirectional 60-minute bezel has broad segments with engraved numerals painted black and deep valleys between them for an aggressive look, a flat mineral crystal sits above a matte black dial. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds rounded indexes that give the appearance of monster teeth coated in luminance marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a small date window. Plongeur - French for ‘diver‘ hands are highly visible ideal when diving complemented by an arrow point second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Citizen motif with “Eco-Drive”, at 6 o’clock we have the Promaster symbol signifying the ISO6425 Certification. On the reverse a screw-down case back with an embossed deep sea divers helmet in the centre, inside a Quartz Citizen Cal. B873. The watch comes fitted on its 31mm Citizen black rubber strap with a signed buckle and also comes with its Citizen presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

This EcoZilla is a beast both on and off the wrist, clearly designed with a true purpose and function of being a professional dive watch. I would love to see someone wear this with t-shirt and jeans out and about as a normal watch, maybe if you've got huge wrists it won't look out of place, but either way, it is an incredible watch designed and made with a true purpose, not many watches like that anymore.

The Brand

Citizen founded the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918. The name originates from a pocket watch it produced in 1924. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN", in the hopes the watch would become a worldwide success. In 1930 the name Citizen Watch Company was introduced. In 1959, Citizen launched Japan’s first fully waterproof watch, the Parawater. During the “quartz crisis” they developed the Eco-Drive movement in 1976. This was one of the first solar-powered watches on the market. Continuing to innovate and expand its reach In 1993, Citizen introduced the world’s first multi-band atomic watch. It uses Atomic clocks around the world to synchronise to within two nanoseconds per day. Citizen make the cases, the dial, the hands, and the movement in their Iida factory in Japan. Today the Citizen Group owns brands such as Alpina, Arnold & Son.
