The Watch

Citizen founded the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918. The name originates from a pocket watch it produced in 1924. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN", in the hopes the watch would become a worldwide success. In 1930 the name Citizen Watch Company was introduced. In 1959, Citizen launched Japan’s first fully waterproof watch, the Parawater. During the “quartz crisis” they developed the Eco-Drive movement in 1976. This was one of the first solar-powered watches on the market. Continuing to innovate and expand its reach In 1993, Citizen introduced the world’s first multi-band atomic watch. It uses the Atomic clocks around the world to synchronise to within two nanoseconds per day. Citizens make the cases, the dial, the hands, and the movement in their Iida factory in Japan. Today the Citizen Group owns brands such as Alpina, Arnold & Son.

Here we have a Citizen "Bullhead" Chronograph 67-9356 with a 38mm tonneau polished stainless steel case, the case sits on your wrist like a cushion with a lug to lug length of 41mm and a thickness of 12.5mm gives the watch an excellent wrist presence. At the top of the case, you find the pump chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre, this configuration gives it its name of “Bullhead”. An outer smooth stainless steel bezel holds a domed crystal, the black “reverse panda” dial has an outer Tachymetric scale precisely printed and applied baton indexes infilled with luminescence mark the hours. At 3 o’clock you have a 30-minute register, at 6 o’clock a day date is vertically positioned, and finally at 9 o’clock a 12-hour register. The stainless steel sword hands are complemented by a white chronograph hand, the white registers are a nice contrast with the black adding asymmetry to the dial with an applied “Citizen” at 12 with precisely printed text underneath. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the watch's reference and serial numbers stamped into it, inside an automatic Citizen Cal. 8110A, 23 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, and this movement has a pillar wheel flyback feature and comes fitted on an 18mm Citizen stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp.

Personal Note

One from the personal collection and one I'll be sad to see go, but I'm making space for something else to come in the future, but any serious new watches will need to wait until after my daughter is here! Either way, I'll likely add another to the personal collection at some point as I have owned 4 at this point! One of the best value-for-money vintage chronographs that also offer a ton in the design department, for me personally.
