The Watch

In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier founded Cartier in Paris, France. He quickly established himself by catering to the elites in society. In 1903 they created the first Cartier Tank and was presented as a victory watch to American general John Pershing in 1918. their first men's wristwatch, inspired by his pilot friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, he called it the Santos. Just four years later in 1907 Cartier began a partnership with Edmond Jaeger of the prominent watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre. Jaeger agreed to be the exclusive supplier of movements for Cartier watches. Today Cartier is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont Group that includes IWC, Montblanc, Vacheron Constantin. The Tank was designed by Louis Cartier, the founder's grandson, it is said he was inspired by the tread of a Renault FT-17 light tank from 1917. Though it is more likely that the design was an update to the square Cartier Santos, at that time having a military connection was great for marketing.

Our Cartier Tank Francaise Chronoflex 2303 has a 28mm stainless steel case that gently curves. Polished and brushed surfaces transition with soft rounded corners. A lug to lug length of 36mm and a thickness of just 6.5mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side square pushers and a crown with a blue cabochon inset. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a cream dial. An outer minute track with radiating Roman numerals in black mark the hours. At 12 o’clock a date register, between the 4 and 5 a 30 minutes register and finally between the 7 and 8 a 12-hour register. Elegant thermally blued sword hands and a fine chronograph hand complete the dial.  At 6 o’clock “Cartier” is printed in black. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with  “Cartier” engraved into it. Inside a Cartier Quartz Chronoflex. The watch comes fitted on its Cartier 20mm stainless steel bracelet with polished outer links and brushed centre links and a hidden deployment clasp.

Personal Note

With the growing Cartier market exploding as we speak these Chronoflex's are incredibly well priced and I suspect will be one of the final pieces to climb, but when they do people will be kicking themselves they didn't pick them up sooner.
