The Watch
The Breitling Chronomat was created by Ernest Schneider who acquired Breitling in 1979. He consulted with the Italian air force aerobatic team known as Frecce Tricolori. Instead of the lugs that bend downward toward the wrist Breitling instead put the bend in the lug end of the bracelet giving it a flat profile. Another feature was the screw-on markers at noon,15,30 and 45 minutes on the bezel.
This particular version has a Polished 40mm stainless steel and gold case, gold ridged pushers and signed crown. Deep etched uni-directional 60-minute satin-finished bezel with gold accents. Sapphire crystal with AR coating covers a black dial with gold baton hour markers. Tachymeter runs along the inner bezel. A large date window at 3 o’clock. Gold trimmed baton hands and chronograph seconds hand with the characteristic script B counterweight. Screwdown crown and case back provide 100m water resistance. Inside we have the Breitling Cal.13 which is based on the well known Valjoux 7750 movement. An Automatic with a quick set date. Beating at 28,800 beats per hour. Breitling upgrade the following movement parts, balance wheel, hairspring, and mainspring with their own alloy metals. Once reassembled the movements go through regulation and fine-tuning at Breitling, in order to meet COSC accuracy requirements.
Fitted with the original 20mm Breitling stainless steel and gold bracelet with signed clasp.
Personal Note
The Breitling Chronomat has certainly become a classic from Breitling, personally I do prefer this slightly older style compared to the latest that Breiting offer! This gives the two-tone look without the hefty price-tag that usually comes along with it, but still a widely respected brand name on the dial.
