Description

Here we have a modern recreation of their 1972 Panda Chronograph, first released by Seiko in 1969 as the ref: 6139. The 2025 Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Panda 1972 Re-Interpretation SRQ047J1 features a 42mm stainless steel case coated with a proprietary super-hard coating, along with flat-ended, tapered lugs for a comfortable fit. The brushed and polished surfaces transition with crisp lines, leading to a lug-to-lug length of 49.5mm and a case thickness of 14.5mm, which gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have piston chronograph pushers and a signed, coin-edged crown at the centre. A smooth, polished, and brushed bezel holds a dual-curved sapphire crystal AR-coated on the inside above a dynamic silver panda dial. A gunmetal grey Tachymetre scale chapter ring sits atop the silver minute track, precisely executed, surrounding a vertically brushed silver dial with applied steel baton indexes tipped with Lumibrite, marking the hours. The chronograph consists of three gunmetal grey contrasting recessed registers: at 3 o’clock, a running seconds register with a white tipped stick hand: at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute register with an orange tipped stick hand: at 4.30, a round framed date window and finally at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute register with an orange tipped stick hand. At noon, we have the applied Seiko motif, printed underneath the Prospex logo, Automatic, which completes this vintage-inspired, modern reinterpretation tricompax chronograph. Facet-edged polished steel baton hands filled with Lumibrite are complemented by an orange-tipped chronograph hand. On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back engraved with the details of the watch around its edge and a high-relief ‘Seiko’ in the centre, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 8R48, 34 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, this column wheel vertical clutch chronograph features hand-winding and quick-set date functionality for your convenience. It comes paired with its 20mm polished and brushed multi-link stainless steel bracelet, secured by a three-fold push-button signed clasp; all links are provided.

Personal Note

As a vintage fan, this modern recreation of their 1972 Panda Chronograph, first released by Seiko in 1969 as the ref: 6139, is a major yes from me. Whilst I do wish it were smaller, I can see how this is a great size for a lot of collectors, and even on my wrist, I can get away with it easily. The bracelet is brilliantly designed and comfortable, the dial is great, and all with an automatic movement and an affordable price tag. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today!

About Seiko

Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892, Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers' watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Calibre 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
