Description

Here we have a beautiful 2025 Christopher Ward The C12 Loco Pasadena Blue. ‘Loco’ is derived from Locomotion in reference to the mesmerising balance. It features a polished, sandblasted, and brushed 41mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case. Its profile borrows many design cues from the Bel Canto, flowing seamlessly over your wrist thanks to the tapered integrated bracelet. Its sculpted mid-section leads to a lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 14mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a deep-knurled, embossed, signed crown. The stepped, brushed, polished, and sandblasted bezel features a 12-sided scalloped edge and holds a box-shaped sapphire crystal AR-coated on both sides, above a dynamic, multi-layered Pasadena Blue dial with a vertical brushed-and-sunburst polished design. Three vertically stacked elements, held by eight screws, consist of a floating free-sprung balance, a small-toothed escapement, and a large floating sapphire watch face. The watch face features a minute track and applied sculpted dagger-shaped indexes marking the hours, filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1. Surrounding these are multi-faceted brushed and diamond-polished sword hands filled with the same lume. The various surfaces play magically with the light as you rotate your wrist. On the reverse is a screw-down exhibition case, inside a Frank Stelzer-designed manually wound Cal. CW-003, 29 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, their second in-house movement based on the original CW-001 (SH21), beautifully finished and featuring the Christopher Ward motif. Feller Pivotages SA assisted them with the unique, custom-designed balance wheel. It comes paired with its 25mm integrated Christopher Ward rubber strap. The watch also comes with its Christopher Ward presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

For the money, this is a ridiculously cool watch. Christopher Ward has really pushed the boundaries with the C12 Loco, and I absolutely love seeing a brand take risks and attempt something genuinely ambitious. That exposed, free-sprung balance is mesmerising to watch, and the way the entire dial has been constructed around it is just brilliant. There’s so much depth, detail and mechanical theatre going on, yet it all comes together beautifully. When you consider the in-house movement, finishing and sheer engineering involved, it’s difficult to believe what Christopher Ward has achieved at this price point. A seriously impressive watch and exactly the sort of innovation I love seeing in the industry. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Christopher Ward

In 2005, Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Christopher Ward embarked on a pioneering venture by founding the world’s first online-only watch brand. Their journey began in an unassuming setting—a converted chicken shed located on a picturesque farm in Berkshire, England. With a vision to revolutionise the watch industry, the trio launched two initial models: the C5 Malvern Automatic and the C3 Malvern Chronograph. Shortly after the brand's debut, a significant turning point came when Dave Malone, a lecturer from Tasmania with a passion for horology, spotted an advertisement featuring their watch powered by an ETA 2824–2 automatic movement. Intrigued by the product, Malone decided to purchase one with the intention of writing a critical review for Timezone.com, one of the world’s largest online watch forums. However, contrary to his original plan, Malone's review turned out to be incredibly favourable, declaring the watch to be the “best value mechanical watch in the world.” This affirmation was a game-changer for Christopher Ward, leading to a substantial surge in sales and solidifying the brand's reputation within the watch community. Recognising the potential for growth and the need for innovation, Christopher Ward sought to enhance their offerings. In 2008, after garnering significant acclaim from industry experts and collectors alike, the company began collaborating with Synergies Horlogères, a Swiss watchmaking firm based in Biel, Switzerland. Owned by Jörg Bader, Synergies Horlogères shared Christopher Ward’s vision for creating intricately designed movements and exceptional timepieces. The collaboration marked the beginning of a rigorous period of research, design, and development. After years of hard work, the fruits of their labour were revealed in 2014 with the introduction of their groundbreaking in-house movement, Calibre SH21. This remarkable achievement was not only notable for being a high-quality mechanical movement but also for being the first innovative and financially viable movement developed by a British watch brand in over half a century. The announcement sent ripples through the watch industry, further establishing Christopher Ward as a formidable player dedicated to redefining the standards of luxury and craftsmanship in horology.
