Sweeping, twisted lugs comfortably sit on your wrist and lead to a lug-to-lug length of 50.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch a classic, functional tool-watch aesthetic. On the right side, a screw-down crown is flanked by traditional pump-style chronograph pushers. A distinct external tachymeter bezel holds a flat, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating above a striking matte black dial. Clean, printed indices with Super-LumiNova mark the hours; at 4:30, a discreet date window sits between the markers, while contrasting syringe hands are complemented by a central chronograph seconds hand and three sub-dials for 60-minute, 24-hour, and sub-second tracking, completing this vintage-racing-inspired design. There’s a lot to like here for the money. The R1 has that brilliant racing chronograph look, and the black dial, tachymeter bezel and pump pushers make for a really handsome, purposeful package. I’m also a big fan of meca-quartz movements in watches like this. You get the accuracy and convenience of quartz, but still have that satisfying mechanical feel when using and resetting the chronograph.
