Description

Here we have a 2024 Tudor Pelagos FXD Titanium 42mm Black 25717N with a 42mm satin-brushed Titanium case; this watch revives a historic collaboration with the US Navy. Tudor has been an official supplier to US Navy SEALs and divers since the 1960s; this design was specifically created as a modern tool to aid military underwater navigation. The Pelagos name is Ancient Greek for ‘open or deep sea’, and FXD refers to the fixed strap bars machined directly into the case structure. The case curves in all the right places with a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence; on the right side is a screw-down crown with the Tudor shield protected by crown guards. The unidirectional Titanium bezel has deep knurling for extra grip and a matte black ceramic 60-minute scale engraved into it; the flat sapphire crystal sits almost flush above a striking matte black dial. An outer minute chapter ring encircles the applied squares and baton indexes made of SuperLumiNova; the characteristic Snowflake hands are coated in the same luminescence, and at 12 o’clock, we have the Tudor motif and at 6 o’clock, “Pelagos” with “Chronometer Officially Certified” 200m/660ft completes the dial. On the reverse, a screw-down coin-edged case back is cleanly finished, housing the in-house automatic Tudor Cal. MT5602 movement, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, COSC certified, where the MT stands for "Manufacture Tudor". The movement has hacking, a bidirectional rotor and a non-magnetic silicon balance spring. It comes paired with its original 22mm Tudor single-piece forest green woven ribbon strap with a red central stripe and titanium hardware. Inside the box, we have an additional 22mm black rubber strap with a titanium buckle, and this watch is sold with its original Tudor presentation box, bezel protector, swing tag, and May 2024 Tudor paperwork.

Personal Note

The Pelagos FXD is one of those watches that feels like it was designed as a tool first and a luxury watch second, and that's exactly what I love about it. The lightweight titanium case, fixed bars, incredible legibility and military-inspired simplicity all feel genuinely purposeful rather than decorative. On the wrist, the 42mm dimensions almost become irrelevant because the titanium makes it so light and comfortable. Add the black dial and bezel, and you have a watch that looks fantastic on and off the wrist. For me, this is Tudor at its best. There's real military history behind the concept, modern manufacture engineering inside, and practically nothing unnecessary about the design. I would not hesitate to add this tool to your collection today!

About Tudor

Swiss watchmaking company “Veuve de Philippe Hüther”, on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex watches, first registered the Tudor trademark in 1926. Wilsdorf took it over himself in 1936. Soon after the Second World War, Hans Wilsdorf, who founded Rolex, knew that it was time for Tudor to have a proper identity of its own. The Tudor Rose started to appear on their dials from this moment. On 6 March 1946, he created the “Montres TUDOR S.A.” company, creating watches for both men and women. Rolex guaranteed the overall design aesthetic, as well as distribution and after-sales service. In 1948, we saw the first Tudor-specific advertising. A few years later, they introduced the TUDOR Oyster Prince in 1952. Hans Wilsdorf allowed Tudor to use their waterproof Oyster case and the original self-winding Perpetual ’rotor’ movement. This was an exclusive arrangement that benefited both brands. Development soon commenced with the introduction of the TUDOR Oyster Prince Submariner, reference 7922, in 1954. This watch was quickly adopted by the French Navy in 1956. Building on their reputation of robustness in 1961, the Rose was replaced by the shield. Later in 1969, we saw the design changes in Ref. 7016, where for the first time, square indexes and angular hands nicknamed “Snowflake” allowed for a greater amount of lume to be applied; this was appreciated by the divers of the French Navy. Today, these innovations can be seen in the Black Bay and Pelagos collections. In 1971, Tudor introduced the Oysterdate chronographs nicknamed “Monte-Carlo” due to their resemblance to a roulette wheel. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1996. In that same year, Tudor decided to shed Rolex-signed components such as the cases, crowns and bracelets in favour of Tudor-branded ones. Today, Tudor uses their in-house movements developed initially in 2015 in collaboration with Breitling.
