The Watch
Here, we have an unworn 2024 Thomas Earnshaw Echelon Fumèe Blue Limited 060/300 pieces. The polished and brushed 40.5mm stainless steel case elegantly curves over your wrist with tapered lugs. A lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 11mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a crown with deep knurling for grip and an attractive cabochon dome. A smooth polished bezel holds a flat crystal above a stunning fumée blue textured dial. An outer minute track surrounds steel applied facet brushed and polished sloping dagger indexes that catch the light as you rotate your wrist; at 3 o’clock, a framed date window, elegant Dauphine hands have polished razor edges and brushed surfaces and are complemented by tapered second-hand. At 12 o’clock, we have the Thomas Earnshaw 1805 motif. At 6 o’clock “Swiss Automatic Movement” and on the bottom edge “Limited Edition”. On the reverse, a solid case back, inside an Automatic Ronda Cal. R150, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, with hand winding and hacking seconds. It comes paired with its 20mm blue leather strap and pin buckle. The watch is sold with its Thomas Earnshaw presentation box and Unsigned paperwork.
Personal Note
If you are like me and hear the brand name 'Thomas Earnshaw' and instantly think of quite cheap and poorly made watches, you wouldn't be wrong, but this Thomas Earnshaw Echelon Fumèe Blue has really surprised me. It isn't perfect, but it truly does punch well above the price point we have it at here. Powered by the automatic Ronda R150 and features a beautiful denim-like dial and a surprisingly high level of finishing on the hands and indices. Limited to just 300 watches and the watch had an original retail price of nearly £1,000 this can be picked up a fraction of that price and it is now worth every penny. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today!
The Brand
Thomas Earnshaw is a historical watch brand founded in 1805. Thomas Earnshaw (1749-1829) was an esteemed English watchmaker known for his pivotal contributions to horology. Thomas Earnshaw designed chronometers that were utilised by notable figures such as Charles Darwin during his voyage on the Beagle, where he made discoveries in the Galapagos Islands, and Captain Mathew Flinders, who is recognised for his work in charting Australia.
In 2012, a group of watch enthusiasts revived the Thomas Earnshaw name, recapturing the essence of the original 1805 brand and building on that heritage. Now, it is part of Dartmouth Brands Ltd, which also owns other watch brands like AVI-8 and Spinnaker. Dartmouth is wholly or majority-owned by Notan Tolani, a naturalised British citizen born in 1946 who immigrated to Hong Kong from Pakistan when he was 22. The company's headquarters is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, and the watches are manufactured and assembled in various countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and China.
