The Watch

Here we have a 2024 Montblanc 1858 40mm Steel & Bronze Bezel 117833 launched at SIHH in 2018, inspired by the 1920s and 1930s Minerva field watches used by many in the military and rugged enough to be worn by intrepid mountain explorers. In 2007, Montblanc created the Minerva Institute for Research in Fine Watchmaking, as part of the Richmont Group since 2006, Montblanc has had the opportunity to delve into the Minerva history books dating back 160 years. The Montblanc 1858 is part of that knowledge base, and many more models will emerge from this research, allowing the Minerva brand name to live on for future generations. The 40mm satin-brushed and polished stainless steel case curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, flowing polished bevel edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 49.5mm and a case thickness of 11mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right is a bronze onion-style crown with deep knurling for grip and a smooth bronze chamfer-edged bezel holding a domed sapphire crystal above a matte black dial. An outer minute rail track has small Arabic numerals surrounding larger Arabic numerals coated in a thick layer of beige-coloured SuperLumiNova, marking the hours for that vintage aesthetic. Elegant Cathedral hands filled with the same coloured lume sit majestically in the centre; at 12 o’clock, we have the Montblanc motif, including the signature Mont Blanc mountain. At 6 o’clock, “Automatic” completes this vintage-inspired timepiece. On the reverse is a screw-down solid case back with the adventurers-themed Mont Blanc Mountains and a compass engraved in the centre, showcasing the proud association Montblanc now has, inside an automatic Montblanc Cal. MB 24.15, 26 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, based on the SW200-1A. The watch comes paired with its 20mm vintage-style calf leather strap secured by a Montblanc signed pin buckle and the watch comes with its Montblanc presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

Montblanc is a brand internationally known for amazing pens, beautiful fragrances, high-quality leather and, importantly to us, elegant watches at fair prices. This Montblanc 1858 in 40mm featuring a bold bronze bezel and crown, reference 117833, is amazing on the wrist, especially with the deep black dial contrasted against the faux-patina on the cathedral hands and indices. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection if you are a fan of something out of the ordinary, yet well-priced!

The Brand

Montblanc has been famous for its fountain pens since 1908. Their involvement in watch manufacturing didn’t happen until 1997 when Montblanc Montre S. A. was created in Le Locle, Switzerland, an area with a long and dynamic history of watchmaking. Minerva, based in Villeret, has a rich history dating back to 1858. Richemont bought this distinguished company in 2006 and later renamed it the ’Institute Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie’. Immediately, Montblanc rebranded Minerva to Villeret. The manufacturing facility in Villeret has introduced a diverse collection of watches, including many complications such as mono-pusher, chronographs, and tourbillons. Since 2015, Davide Cerrato has been the managing director of their “watch division”. He brings with him experience from Panerai and Tudor, where he was in charge of marketing design and product development.
