The Watch

Here we have a 2024 Marloe Tay 35mm Sail Off-White Dial Automatic, limited to 300 pieces. The watch pays tribute to Victoria Drummond MBE, who, through adversity in a man's world, became the UK's first female marine engineer and the very first female member of the Institute of Marine Engineers; during World War Two, she served with the Merchant Navy as an engineering officer and received a number of awards for bravery under fire, a truly inspiring story. The 35mm polished stainless steel round case curves over your wrist with thick angled lugs and the distinctive flat-ended lugs have a lug-to-lug length of 41mm and a case thickness of 10mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, a signed crown with deep knurling for grip. The smooth bezel has a bevel edge and flat top surface. A flat sapphire crystal AR coating on both sides sits above an off-white and black dial. A sloping outer minute chapter ring with contrasting white numerals creates a bowl effect and surrounds hour markers and pips in black. The black-outlined hands are lume-filled and complemented by a lollipop sweeping second-hand tipped in red. Double lume pips at 12 o’clock help in orientation at night. The text is finely printed in black at 12 o’clock with “British Design” printed on the bottom edge. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with the details of the watch around its edge, inside an automatic Miyota 9039, 24 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. This movement has hacking and Parashock anti-shock. It comes paired with its original 18mm Marloe quick-release leather strap and signed pin buckle and the watch comes with its Marloe presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

I have always been a big supporter of UK watch brands and own multiple myself, Marloe is one of those brands that offers incredible value for money and unique designs with great stories behind them and this Marloe Tay is no exception. Coming in at 35mm it is incredibly charming on the wrist and punches well above its price point. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today!

The Brand

In 2015, while changing a quartz battery, they were shocked and felt a little short-changed with the lack of a full movement encased in their watch. Oliver & Gordon were inspired to create a much better design, bringing together their experience in a much slower-living counter-culture, and the craftsmanship of a mechanical movement. In a very short amount of time, the Marloe Watch Company was born.
