Description

Here we have a 2024 Grand Seiko Heritage Collection 45GS Limited SLGW005 limited to 1200 pieces, the impressively sculptured 39mm stainless steel case is a modern interpretation of their iconic 1968 45GS which was their first high-beat manual wind, exquisitely mirror polished and brushed angled surfaces curve over your wrist toward the thick lugs, its polished curved flanks lead to a lug-to-lug of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed, deep knurled crown sitting slightly recessed. The smooth, polished and brushed bevel sits recessed into the case and holds a box-shaped sapphire crystal, AR-coated on the inside. The off-white dial features an outer minute track surrounding applied, chamfered-edge batons with a black fill on the top surface, which subtly interact with the light as you rotate your wrist. Elegant Dauphine hands are Zaratsu polished with razor edges, complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock, an applied Seiko motif, and at 6 o’clock, an applied ‘GS’ ‘High-Beat’ ‘36000’ completes this distinctive vintage-infused dress watch. On the reverse, we have a screw-down exhibition case back, engraved with the details of the watch and its limited number around its edge, inside a manually wound Grand Seiko Cal. 9SA4, 47 jewels, beating at 36,000 beats per hour, first released in 2020, precisely made at their Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. The movement features a dual impulse escapement, a Grand Seiko Free sprung balance, and twin barrels that deliver increased power. It has been adjusted to six positions and three different temperatures over 17 days at the factory, and includes a power reserve indicator. The movement is finished with attractive Côtes de Genève decoration. It comes paired with its original Seiko 19mm crocodile leather strap and signed pin buckle, and includes its Seiko presentation box, swing tag, and papers.

Personal Note

From afar, this incredible limited edition by Grand Seiko is easily mistaken for the vintage 45GS from 1968, but once up close and in hand, you can see the attention to detail and finishing we have become accustomed to from Grand Seiko. About Grand Seiko

The first Grand Seiko debuted in Tokyo in 1960. The ref:3180 was made by Suwa Seikosha. Rather than sending its 25 Jewels Chronometer movement to the Swiss to be tested, Seiko decided to do the testing themselves. The European Chronometer Official Association believed that a chronometer-rated watch had to be independently tested to be awarded that designation. Seiko watches were not independently tested so therefore they could not be chronometers. The ECOA did what irritated watchmakers do; they wrote a stern letter to Seiko requesting that the designation of Chronometer on Grand and King Seiko watches stop. Seiko obliged and ceased using a chronometer on their watches. In response, the Japanese Chronometer Authorisation Association was started in 1968 as an independent group to test timepieces to chronometer standards. The Association was short-lived: due to the rise of quartz watches, it closed in 1983. Today, Grand Seiko movements are tested over 17 days in 6 positions compared to COSC testing over 15 days in 5 positions. In 1985, Suwa Seikosha became Seiko Epson Corporation. In 2017, Seiko announced that Grand Seiko would become an independent brand.
