Description

Here we have a 2024 Grand Seiko GMT Quartz 9F Black SBGN027G with an impressively sculptured 39mm stainless steel case, exquisitely Zaratsu polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges and curve over your wrist toward the drilled lugs, leading to a lug-to-lug of 45mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm to give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed crown sitting slightly recessed, and a 24-hour bezel holds a dual-curved sapphire crystal, AR-coated on the inside, which sits above a black dial. An outer 24-hour chapter ring in black and silver, featuring 12-hour sections that indicate night and day hours, surrounds applied Zaratsu-polished, chamfered-edge batons and trapezoid indexes marking the hours. The indexes magically play with the light as you rotate your wrist. At 4 o’clock, a date window features a white background and black numerals. Elegant Dauphine hands are Zaratsu polished with razor-sharp edges, a tapered second hand, and an arrow hand indicating the 24-hour position. At 12 o’clock, we have the Grand Seiko motif, and at 6 o'clock, “GMT” completes this incredibly stylish travelling companion. On the reverse is a screw-down case back with the reference number and a deeply embossed medallion in the centre, inside a Quartz Grand Seiko Cal. 9F86, a top-tiered Quartz movement. Seiko grows its own quartz crystals, and using a higher torque allows them to use these heavier GS hands, keeping their brand aesthetic intact. The watch comes fitted on its 20mm stainless steel bracelet with expertly Zaratsu brushed and polished edges secured by a push-button three-fold signed clasp; all links are provided, and also comes with the Grand Seiko presentation box, swing tag and papers.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Grand Seiko Box, swing tag and paperwork. The watch comes paired with its original stainless steel Grand Seiko-signed bracelet, secured by a push-button Grand Seiko-signed three-fold clasp; all links are provided. The watch is from July 2024 and is sold in worn condition, but overall it is in fair condition, as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months Warranty.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate to have sold a fair few of the 9F Quartz Grand Seiko GMTs over the years, but this is my first time getting in this reference SBGN027G, and it is so far my favourite. The black and grey tones of the dial work perfectly with the fixed bezel and the attached bracelet. Considering this watch retails for a smidge over £3,000, what we are asking for this 2024 model is a no-brainer. Snap it up today whilst you still can!

About Grand Seiko

The first Grand Seiko debuted in Tokyo in 1960, the reference 3180 was made by Suwa Seikosha. Rather than sending its 25 Jewels Chronometer movement to the Swiss to be tested, Seiko decided to do the testing themselves. The European Chronometer Official Association believed that a chronometer-rated watch had to be independently tested to be awarded that designation. Seiko watches were not independently tested, so they could not be chronometers. The ECOA did what irritated watchmakers do; they wrote a stern letter to Seiko requesting that the designation of Chronometer on Grand and King Seiko watches stop. Seiko obliged and ceased using "Chronometer" on their watches. In response, the Japanese Chronometer Authorisation Association was started in 1968 as an independent group to test timepieces to chronometer standards. The Association was short-lived: due to the rise of quartz watches, it closed in 1983. Today, Grand Seiko movements are tested over 17 days in six positions, compared to COSC testing over 15 days in five positions. In 1985, Suwa Seikosha became Seiko Epson Corporation, and in 2017, Seiko announced that Grand Seiko would become an independent brand.
