Description

Here we have a 2024 Christopher Ward The Twelve Ice Cream Blue. The Ice Cream collection was released to celebrate International Ice Cream Day on July 21st. Featuring a polished, sandblasted and brushed 40mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case. Its profile takes many of the design cues from the iconic Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, flowing seamlessly over your wrist thanks to the integrated bracelet. A lug-to-lug length of 43mm and a case thickness of 10mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, a screw-down, embossed, signed crown is protected by low-profile crown guards. The stepped, brushed, and sandblasted dodecagonal bezel features a polished 12-sided scalloped edge, holding a sapphire crystal AR-coated above a dynamic three-dimensional stamped Ice Cream Blue dial of repeating ‘pluses’ from the twin flag. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds applied brushed and facet diamond-polished dagger indexes filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1 marking the hours; at 6 o’clock, we have a colour-matched date window. Brushed and diamond-polished sword hands filled with the same lume are complemented by a tapered, sweeping second hand. The various surfaces play magically with the light as you rotate your wrist. At 12 o’clock, an applied Christopher double flag motif, and at 6 o’clock, “Automatic” completes this striking, versatile sports watch. On the reverse is a screw-down exhibition case with the details around its edge inside an automatic Sellita Cal. SW200-1, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, a robust and reliable movement, with a bespoke “Colimaçoné” finishing (a type of twisting sunray graining), and the rotor has a double Twin-flag engraving across it. It comes paired with its 23mm stainless steel integrated bracelet, innovative quick-release system, and a signed concealed butterfly clasp; all links included, plus a 23mm integrated Christopher Ward blue rubber strap and signed pin buckle. The watch also comes with its Christopher Ward presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

This is the Christopher Ward The Twelve Ice Cream Blue. The Ice Cream collection was released to celebrate International Ice Cream Day on July 21st, which I had no idea was a real thing, and I think it should be weekly if you ask me. What may sound a little gimmicky at first is executed really well in the classic Twelve case, but this one features a bright blue dial, and it really pops in the sun. I would not hesitate to add this fun watch to your collection today. It will certainly put a smile on your face!

About Christopher Ward

In 2005, Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Christopher Ward embarked on a pioneering venture by founding the world’s first online-only watch brand. Their journey began in an unassuming setting—a converted chicken shed located on a picturesque farm in Berkshire, England. With a vision to revolutionise the watch industry, the trio launched two initial models: the C5 Malvern Automatic and the C3 Malvern Chronograph. Shortly after the brand's debut, a significant turning point came when Dave Malone, a lecturer from Tasmania with a passion for horology, spotted an advertisement featuring their watch powered by an ETA 2824–2 automatic movement. Intrigued by the product, Malone decided to purchase one with the intention of writing a critical review for Timezone.com, one of the world’s largest online watch forums. However, contrary to his original plan, Malone's review turned out to be incredibly favourable, declaring the watch to be the “best value mechanical watch in the world.” This affirmation was a game-changer for Christopher Ward, leading to a substantial surge in sales and solidifying the brand's reputation within the watch community. Recognising the potential for growth and the need for innovation, Christopher Ward sought to enhance their offerings. In 2008, after garnering significant acclaim from industry experts and collectors alike, the company began collaborating with Synergies Horlogères, a Swiss watchmaking firm based in Biel, Switzerland. Owned by Jörg Bader, Synergies Horlogères shared Christopher Ward’s vision for creating intricately designed movements and exceptional timepieces. The collaboration marked the beginning of a rigorous period of research, design, and development. After years of hard work, the fruits of their labour were revealed in 2014 with the introduction of their groundbreaking in-house movement, Calibre SH21. This remarkable achievement was not only notable for being a high-quality mechanical movement but also for being the first innovative and financially viable movement developed by a British watch brand in over half a century. The announcement sent ripples through the watch industry, further establishing Christopher Ward as a formidable player dedicated to redefining the standards of luxury and craftsmanship in horology.
