The Watch
The 2024 Christopher Ward C60 #Tide V4 Logo COSC is made in conjunction with #tide implemented by the Swiss non-profit Jan & Oscar Foundation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Around Ranong, Thailand, the Moken and other tribes around the region ‘fish’ for ocean plastic, which is converted by #tide ocean material, a social enterprise, into plastic pellets, these are turned into a quality canvas-like material that is perfect for watch straps or a moldable liquid plastic. Both have been applied on the C60 #tide. The 42mm stainless steel Light-catcher™ case has polished and brushed surfaces that transition with crisp edges. A lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a case thickness of 14mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have a signed screw-down crown protected by crown guards. The unidirectional stainless steel bezel has a blue zirconia (ZrOÇ) ceramic 60-minute insert with Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL C1 numerals. The domed sapphire crystal sits above a striking sapphire blue sapphire dial with a curvy wave pattern in Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL across it. The applied bevel-edged baton indexes coated in Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL C1 sit above the dial, marking the hours. Broad arrow hands are coated in the same Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL C1 and complimented by a blue signature trident counterweighted sweeping second hand. At 6 o’clock, a framed date window with its ring of numbers can be seen through the dial. The bezel numerals, indexes, and hands have a neon glow from the SuperLuminova in the dark when charged. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the #tide logo embossed in the centre and a ring of the recycled plastic has also been embedded in the case back. Inside an Automatic Sellita SW200-1 COSC, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. COSC Certified, with a bespoke “Colimaçoné” finishing (a type of twisting sunray graining), and the rotor has a double Twin-flag engraving across it. It comes paired with its original Christopher Ward 22mm quick-release brushed marine-grade stainless steel bracelet with a signed micro-adjusted ratchet clasp for your convenience. It also comes with its Christopher Ward presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
The Christopher Ward C60 #Tide has been a great success, and that will likely come as no surprise. Featuring a wonderful blue sapphire dial, which is semi-translucent, the classic C60 42mm case which wears effortlessly on the wrist and paired on the super comfortable Christopher Ward bracelet. This example features the V4 Logo, which seems to have been the most popular, but we won't start up the CW logo wars. I would not hesitate to add this great watch to your collection today!
The Brand
Founded in 2005 by Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Christopher Ward, they started the world's first online-only watch brand. Launched from a converted chicken shed on a farm in Berkshire. Soon after the launch of the brand, Dave Malone was a Tasmanian lecturer and watch expert. When he saw the press ad for a watch powered by an ETA 2824–2 automatic movement, he decided to buy one. He planned to write a critical review on the world’s largest watch forum, Timezone.com. Fortunately for Christopher Ward, his review was most complimentary. Stating the watch was the “best value mechanical watch in the world”. Sales immediately spiked, and Christopher Ward became firmly established. After receiving such high praise in the industry and from collectors in 2008, they began work with assistance from a Swiss watchmaking company, Synergies Horlogères. Based in Biel, Switzerland. SH was owned and led by Jörg Bader who had the same vision Christopher Ward had on designing a new movement. After many years of design and development, July 2nd, 2014, saw the announcement to an astounding watch industry of their own in-house movement, Calibre SH21, the first commercially viable mechanical movement from a British watch brand in over 50 years.
