A 2024 Benrus Orbit Robot Skindiver Automatic, a wonderfully funky modern revival of the brand’s distinctive 1972 dive watch. Its compact cushion-shaped case captures the unmistakable UFO styling of the period, framing a fantastic grey fumé dial brought to life by bold orange and white hands and chunky luminous markers. Despite its 41mm diameter, the remarkably short 43mm lug-to-lug gives it wonderfully wearable proportions, while the Swiss Soprod P024 automatic movement, sapphire crystal and 200 metres of water resistance provide thoroughly modern capability. Complete with its original stainless steel bracelet, presentation box and paperwork, this is a characterful reissue that embraces the eccentricity of 1970s watch design without sacrificing everyday usability.

Description

Here we have a 2024 Benrus Orbit Robot Skindiver Automatic 41mm, a delightfully funky, retro-inspired tool watch that resurrects one of the brand's most charismatic historical designs. A beautifully executed modern reissue of their iconic 1972 release, this piece blends coveted 1970s "UFO" styling with upgraded, modern build specifications. The 41mm 316L stainless steel case showcases a distinctive, brushed cushion-shaped architecture that wears exceptionally flat on the wrist. With an ultra-compact lug-to-lug length of just 43mm and a sleek 13mm case thickness, its near-lugless layout delivers an incredibly balanced, ergonomic wrist presence despite its commanding visual diameter. A classic stainless-steel friction-fit rotating dive bezel with a lumed 12 o'clock triangle caps the case, while a signed screw-down crown helps deliver a robust 200-metre (20 ATM) water resistance rating. A domed sapphire crystal sits over a striking, signature grey fumé dial, offering a mesmerising gradient that shifts smoothly from light grey at the centre to deep charcoal at the perimeter. Faithful to the original design, the high-contrast layout features rectangular block hour markers paired with vibrant orange and white hands, all generously filled with premium Swiss BGW9 Super-LumiNova for excellent low-light legibility. For clean utility, a date window sits neatly at 3 o'clock. On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back features a playful engraving of the custom Benrus robot-orbiting-Earth motif. Beating inside is the premium, Swiss-made automatic Soprod Cal. P024 movement, a reliable calibre operating at a smooth frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) to deliver hacking seconds and quickset date functionality. This reference comes with its original 19mm bracelet and includes its presentation box and official paperwork.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Benrus box and paperwork. This highly exclusive reference comes paired with its original 19mm bracelet. The watch is from Circa. 2024 and is in worn condition, but overall it is in very fair condition, as you can see from the photographs. The watch comes with our 12-Months Warranty.

Personal Note

This is exactly the sort of reissue I enjoy, take something wonderfully quirky from the archives, keep the character and then make it genuinely usable as a modern watch. The 1970s UFO-style case, fumé dial and flashes of orange give it loads of personality, but what really surprised me is how well it wears. At 41mm, it sounds fairly substantial, yet that tiny 43mm lug-to-lug makes it incredibly compact on the wrist. Funky vintage design with modern reliability and 200 metres of water resistance, there’s a lot to like here. For the money, this is hard to ignore, so snap it up and add it to your collection today!

About Benrus

Benrus was founded in 1921 by Benjamin Lazrus and his two brothers in New York. The brand name is made up of the first syllable of his name and the last syllable of the family name. With $5,000 in savings, they started importing Swiss watch cases and movements. Their headquarters can still be found in the Hippodrome building, which sits in the heart of the city's Jewellery Quarter. During the 1940s, their Sky Chief, a combination of a pilot watch and their first chronograph, became popular among the growing number of airlines and airline pilots worldwide. The DTU-2A (MIL-W-3818) field watch was a common sight during the Vietnam War in both steel and later plastic. The use of plastic meant they could just throw away the watch when it broke rather than have it repaired, something that is very much frowned upon today. The development of their 666ft compressor dive watches began in the 1960s. In 1968, the late Steve McQueen wore a Belrus watch in his film “Bullitt”. Today, their military field and dive watches are worn by members of the Navy SEALs and other special operations units. At the height of the 'quartz crisis' in 1977, BENRUS declared bankruptcy. Their intellectual property was bought and sold many times over the years until the company rights were bought in lote 2017 by their former principal's solicitor, Michael Sweeney, who heads an investment group that has begun reviving some of their classic watches as part of the Heritage range. In 2021, they celebrated their 100th anniversary.
