The Watch

Here we have a 2023 Yema Superman 500 GMT Automatic "Pepsi" with a 39mm brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with tapered flat-ended drilled lugs. Part of their Heritage range it has taken its inspiration from their 1963 Superman. A lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence, brushed and polished surfaces transition with well-defined lines. On the right side, we have a signed crown protected by crown guards. The iconic patented bezel lock has been improved to ensure a smoother operation, 24-click bidirectional bezel with deep knurling for extra grip and a two-tone 24-hour “Pepsi” aluminium insert clearly marked with silver numerals, a double domed sapphire crystal give that vintage aesthetic above a black dial. An outer minute track surrounds printed disc and baton indexes coated in Super-LumiNova Grade A, at 3 o’clock a framed date window, white numerals on a black background for contrast, the hands consist of a sword and arrow hand filled with the same Super-LuimiNova, a traffic stop light sweeping second hand and a red arrow point GMT hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Yema Superman motif, “World Time Automatique” and a red “500 Metre” completes this versatile adventurer's travel companion. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the details of the watch around its edge and the embossed Yema crest in the centre, inside an in-house automatic Yema Cal. 3000, 29 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its 18mm brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding flip-lock clasp and dive extension, plus an unworn 18mm stainless steel bracelet, and the watch comes with its Yema presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate enough to have purchased and sold many vintage and modern Yema models over the years and I'm always impressed how they have taken inspiration from their past whilst still producing a very modern watch both in design but also build quality as we'd expect. This Superman 500 GMT "Pepsi" is a great watch to add to the collection that won't break the bank but punches well above its price point.

The Brand

Yema was founded in 1948 by Henry Louis Belmont after he came top of his class at the National Watchmaking School of Besancon in 1931. The legend goes that the name Yema was created by a teenager's imagination who entered a competition run by Henry. 1963 saw the introduction of the Yema Superman, essentially made for dive professionals; it had a 300-metre water resistance. Its bezel lock system made it quite unique and was soon adopted by the French Air Force for its pilots. In the 1960s Yema became the leading watch exporter in France selling more than 500,000 watches a year in over 50 countries. In 1982 Yema went to space with Yema Spationaute 1.
