The Watch
Here we have a 2023 Vertex M100 Black Automatic on Bracelet M100AC, this version has a stealthy black DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating adding a durable layer, A- stands for Automatic and C for Covert. A fitting tribute to the watch made for the British military, the legendary Vertex WWW Cal59 timepiece of 1944. The curvaceous 40mm case curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, and the crisp edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 48.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a screw-down crown. A brushed smooth bezel holds a double domed box sapphire crystal AR coated above a matte black dial with the applied moulded X1 Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals adding height and real interest and dimension. Elegant syringe hands are lume filled and at 6 o’clock we have a sub-seconds register. At 12 o’clock in keeping with its military heritage there sits a Broad Arrow (pheon), the mark indicating British Government Issue property. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with Vertex embossed across the centre, inside a quality automatic Sellita Cal. SW260, 31 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, Elaboré Grade custom-made with the Vertex’s Cal59 ratchet weight rotor. The watch comes paired with its 20mm Vertex quick-release black DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coated stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp plus three additional Vertex straps in the box, and this watch is sold with its original Vertex tough pelican box, spring bar removal tool and Vertex paperwork and accessories.
Personal Note
This Vertex M100 Black automatic on its black Vertex Bracelet is the perfect example of a modern reinterpretation of the vintage Vertex Dirty Dozen, for those wanting the perfect re-edition he has essentially done that, so this is the version that Vertex ancestors would make today if they were around today to make it... I'm a big fan and if you are, snap it up today whilst you can.
The Brand
Vertex was the brainchild of Claude Lyons of London born in 1885. At the age of 17, he started his involvement in the watch Industry. With the help of a £1000 loan, he set up Dreadnaught Watches in 1912. In 1915 they were producing watches for the British armed forces during WW1. In 1916 he founded Vertex Watches Ltd in both Hatton Gardens and in Switzerland. In 1927 Vertex became the exclusive importer of Movado Watches to the UK. 1938 Henry Lyons Claude's son-in-law joins the company. In 1940 their Hatton Gardens premises were destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb. In 1941 as a Captain in the British Army Henry was asked to create a watch suitable for the British military. 1944 saw the production of the Cal.59 W.W.W. Nav watch. Business continued successfully throughout the 50s and 60s. Sadly in 1972 due to the emergence of the Quartz revolution and the expiring of his lease in Hatton Gardens, Henry closed the Company. In 2015 Claude’s Great Grandson Don Cochrane re-established the Company. And the rest is history as they say.
