The Watch

Here we have a 2023 TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Skipper, initially designed by Jack Heuer when they became the official timekeepers in the 1960s for the iconic yacht the “Intrepid”, which entered the America's Cup. It has a 39mm polished and brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. We have the polished piston chronograph pushers down the right side and a signed crown at the centre. A slim, polished, smooth bezel holds a domed “Glass box” sapphire crystal, which provides a perfect view above a striking sunburst blue dynamic dial. A pronounced sloping chapter ring has the white minute track and triangle markers around its top edge, and the applied stepped baton indexes filled with Super-LumiNova sit recessed into the chapter ring, drawing the eyes towards the two recessed sub-dials; at 3 o’clock a 15-minute countdown in orange, green and teal and at 9 o’clock a 12-hour register in teal with “Skipper” inside, at 6 o’clock we have the sub-seconds and a date window perfectly balancing this colourful dial. At 12 o’clock, “Carrera Tag Heuer” polished steel baton hands are filled with Super-LumiNova and are complemented by a tapered orange chronograph hand. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge, inside an automatic TAG Cal. TH20-06, 33 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, column wheel chronograph with a skeletonised rotor. The watch comes paired with its 21mm blue fabric strap secured by a signed push-button clasp and comes with its Tag Heuer presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

This is by far one of the best modern interpretations of a vintage watch that TAG Heuer has done in recent years, they restrained from a 1:1 homage of the original but instead used the original to influence the modern design we see here and it works amazingly. The case shape, whilst classic Carrera, definitely has some differences that are noticeable on the wrist and, dare I say, make it wear more comfortably. For the price, it is hard to go wrong with this choice for a fun chronograph. I would not hesitate to book an appointment to try it on for yourself, but be warned, you will likely walk away with it on your wrist!

The Brand

Edouard Heuer founded The Heuer Watch Company in 1860 in St. Imier, Switzerland. Chronographs have been the mainstay for Heuer and later TAG Heuer. It features many models and configurations, expanding the possibilities to the fullest. In 1958, Jack Heuer, Edouard’s son, joined the company. In 1962, the first generation of Autavia was launched. Famously worn in the 1970s by Formula One drivers such as Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi, Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti, and many more. In 1999, TAG Heuer accepted a bid from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A.
