The Watch
Here we have a 2023 Squale 50 ATMOS Militaire Blasted 1521 Automatic with a 41.5mm bead blasted 316L stainless steel case; the 1521 pays tribute to their dive heritage, specifically to their classic 1970s Charles von Büren-designed Squale 1521; they became the official suppliers to the Italian Navy and paratroopers. Bevel edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 48.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist; at 4 o’clock, a signed screw-down crown was slightly recessed into the case. A unidirectional bezel has a black aluminium dive insert with large lume-coated numerals holding a flat sapphire crystal AR coated above a matte black dial, and an outer minute track has baton indexes coated in Superluminova C3 luminescence marking the hours. The hands consist of a slim orange minute hand and a broad sword hand filled with the same luminance complemented by a counterweighted second hand. At 12 o’clock, underneath the inverted triangle, we have the Squale motif and "Militaire" at 6 o’clock “Automatic 500m”, completing this military-inspired dive watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Squale “Professional” acid-etched in the centre, inside an automatic Sellita SW 200-1, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour; the movement has hacking and hand winding for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on its 20mm Squale tropic rubber strap with a signed buckle. It comes with its Squale presentation box, swing tag, travel pouch, spring bar removal tool, and papers.
Personal Note
Squale always surprises me with how well they wear on the wrist for their size, they have really nailed wrist presence just like Seiko has with a lot of their diver range. The bead-blasted case works perfectly with the matte black dial and the vibrant pop of orange in the minute hand, a perfect contrast on the wrist that catches the eye. I would not hesitate to add this Squale to your collection, the value for money is undeniable!
The Brand
Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watchcases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950, von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands, including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio, and Sinn. In 1974 Squale decided to enter the watch market in their own right. Unfortunately, like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis”, they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010, the Maggi family, who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura Valley, Switzerland.
