The Watch

Here we have a 2023 Squale 1521 Onda Blue on Leather 1521ODG.PS with a 42mm 316L high polished stainless steel "von Büren" case that has a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. This collection pays tribute to their dive heritage and specifically to their classic Charles von Büren-designed 1960s Squale 1521 which was also made for Doxa, Heuer, and Blancpain. The flowing lines of the case make it very comfortable to wear, at 4 o’clock a screw-down crown is recessed into the case to protect it against knocks. A 120 clicks uni-directional stainless steel bezel has a matte grey DLC coated dive insert with raised polished numerals, the bezel is screwed on for easy removal. The flat sapphire crystal has an AR-coated for added visibility, and a stunning blue Onda dial (Onda is Italian for waves) depicts the energy of the waves with its distinctive pattern. Broad-applied baton indexes are coated in Super-LumiNova C3 marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a date window. Broad sword hands are coated in Super-LumiNova complemented by a centre second hand with a lumed counterweight, at 12 o’clock we have the Squale motif and at 6 o’clock “ONDA ''. The polished screw-down case back has Squale acid etched in the centre, inside an automatic Sellita SW 200-1 Elaborè movement, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this Sellita Elaborè movement has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on a Squale 20 mm made-in-Italy brown leather strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Squale presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

For me these 1521's are part of the best in the Squale lineup, these models merge their history and heritage into a modern package perfect for everyday wear. The blue of this dial makes a perfect summer watch, in some lights, it borders on purple which is fantastic. Squale always manages to surprise me with how well they wear on the wrist for 42mm. Definitely a watch to try on!

The Brand

Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watchcases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950 von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio and Sinn. In 1974 Squale decided to enter the watch market in its own right. Unfortunately like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis,” they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010 the Maggi family who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura Valley Switzerland.
