The Watch
Here we have a 2023 Squale 1521 Black Blasted on Rubber 1521BKBL.NT with a 42mm blasted stainless steel case, this collection pays tribute to their dive heritage and specifically to their classic Charles von Büren-designed 1960s Squale 1521. The curve of the case leads to a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist, and on the right side, at 4 o’clock we have a large screw-down crown sitting recessed in the case. The blasted steel unidirectional bezel has a black 60-minute insert, and a flat sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a matte black dial, an outer minute track with printed disc and baton indexes infilled with Super-LumiNova C3 marks the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. The hands consist of an orange minute hand and a white hour hand each infilled with Super-LumiNova C3 complemented by a square counterweighted second hand, this colour combination is very popular with divers as it increases the hand's visibility in the ocean depths and is found on many professional dive watches. At 12 o’clock we have the Squale motif and at 6 o’clock the smiley “Squale” with “Professional” printed underneath completes this vintage-inspired dive watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the acid-etched Squale logo and “Professional”, inside an automatic Sellita SW 200-1 Elaborè movement, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this Sellita Elaborè movement has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm black Rubber strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Squale presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
For me these bead-blasted cases on the 1521 are perfect and some of the best in the Squale line up, these models merge their history and heritage into a modern package perfect for everyday wear. Squale always manages to surprise me with how well they wear on the wrist for their size.
The Brand
Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watchcases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950 von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio and Sinn. In 1974 Squale decided to enter the watch market in its own right. Unfortunately like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis,” they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010 the Maggi family who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura Valley Switzerland.
