The Watch

Seiko first launched The Cocktail Time in 2010; it was created in partnership with Shinobu Ishigaki, who is one of the world's most highly regarded cocktail makers and the owner of a bar in the Shibuya district, Tokyo; he has been featured in Anthony Bourdain's series, "No Reservations," his elaborate cocktails were the inspiration behind the original Cocktail Time watches, with their flamboyant and colourful sunburst dials. Here, we have a 2023 Seiko Presage Automatic Rose Gold SRP852J1 with a stunning 34mm rose gold-plated case. Its brushed and polished surfaces transition effortlessly towards the tapering lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 40mm and a case thickness of 11mm ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. A large signed crown on the right side, making adjustments a breeze. Its bevel-edged bezel holds a domed Hardlex crystal, and the white textured dial has a deep radiating pattern that catches the light perfectly, fine rose gold plated facet-edged indexes mark the hours, and at 3 o’clock, a framed date window. Elegant Dauphine hands and a long tapering centre seconds hand give the watch a classic vintage look and feel. On the reverse, we have a screw-down exhibition case, inside an automatic Seiko 4R35, 23 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour with a gold-plated skeletonised rotor. The watch comes paired with its original Seiko 18mm leather strap with a signed folding deployant buckle and comes with its Seiko presentation box and paperwork.

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first actual in-house made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
