Description

Here is a stunning 2023 Rolex Datejust 31 Diamond Dial Steel & Gold Jubilee 278273, featuring a perfectly proportioned 31mm case that offers an elegant, timeless presence on the wrist. This striking combination of 904L Oystersteel and 18ct yellow gold is known as Rolesor, a signature Rolex marriage of strength and nobility patented by the brand as early as 1933. The case expertly blends polished and brushed surfaces with crisp, defined edges that flow seamlessly into its tapered lugs. Its curvaceous flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 37mm and a case thickness of 10mm. On the right side, a screw-down twinlock crown ensures robust water resistance, while the iconic fluted 18ct yellow gold bezel frames a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Beneath the glass sits a magnificent sunburst silver dial that catches the light from every angle. The dial is elegantly elevated by original Rolex factory-set diamonds acting as hour markers, each meticulously set in 18ct gold surrounds. At 3 o’clock, the classic date window sits beneath the signature Cyclops magnification lens, while polished 18ct yellow gold hands and the applied coronet at 12 o’clock complete the dial's luxurious aesthetic. On the reverse, a coin-edged screw-down case back houses the automatic Rolex Cal. 2236 movement. This next-generation calibre features a Syloxi silicon hairspring and high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, offering outstanding resistance to shocks and temperature variations. It boasts Rolex's strict Superlative Chronometer Certification of -2/+2 seconds per day, operating at 28,800 BPH with a quick-set date and hacking seconds. The watch comes beautifully paired with its original 16mm Rolex Steel and 18ct Yellow Gold Jubilee bracelet, renowned for its flexible five-piece link design, and is secured by a concealed folding Crownclasp; all links are provided. This exceptional mid-size piece comes complete with its original Rolex presentation box, swing tags, and official papers.

Personal Note

I genuinely think the 31mm Datejust is one of the most underrated sizes in the Rolex collection. It wears amazingly well, even on my 7-inch wrist, and proves once again that you really shouldn’t judge a watch by its diameter alone. The proportions are fantastic, and the combination of the fluted yellow gold bezel, Jubilee bracelet, and silver diamond dial is just timeless. It has plenty of presence without needing to be a big watch. Elegant, comfortable, and incredibly versatile. I’d encourage anyone who thinks 31mm is too small to actually try one on, you might be pleasantly surprised. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Rolex

In 1905, German-born Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis set up a company in London that imported Swiss movements which are installed in British cases and sold to jewellers who put their names on the dials. Recognising the potential for their brand, Wilsdorf created the brand name Rolex in 1908. In 1910, a Rolex became the first wristwatch to carry the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, awarded by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland. Demand for Rolex watches rose swiftly, and British taxes on the Swiss movements Rolex used prompted Wilsdorf to move the business to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919. With production costs lowered, Wilsdorf quickly set out to solve the age-old problem of moisture and dust entering a watch case and damaging the movement. The Rolex watchmakers came up with a fully sealed watch case, which Wilsdorf named the Oyster, and released to an appreciative audience in 1926. In 1931, Rolex introduced the first automatic winding wristwatch, giving it the legendary name Oyster Perpetual. In 1945, they released Datejust. The Datejust was the first watch to have the date jump instantaneously at midnight. The 1950s saw a whole lot of releases such as the Air-King (1958), the Explorer (1953), the Submariner (1953), the GMT Master (1955), the Day-Date (1956), the electromagnetic field resistant Milgauss (1956), the Lady-Datejust (1957) and the first Deep Sea model (1960). Wilsdorf’s death in 1960 saw ownership of Rolex S.A. (a collection of sub-companies) passed to the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, which was founded by Wilsdorf in 1945, the mission of which is simply to sustain Rolex S.A. indefinitely.
