Here we have a 2023 Nivada Super Antarctic 3.6.9 Black 'Aged Lume' 38mm 32032A10. This striking timepiece features a 38mm 316L stainless steel case with decorative twisted lugs, serving as a faithful modern reinterpretation of the legendary 1950s Antarctic explorer watches. The multi-layered case architecture features polished chamfered edges alongside brushed sides, offering a commanding lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a bold thickness of 11.5mm for a powerful, balanced presence on the wrist. On the right side sits a signed screw-down crown ensuring robust water resistance. The standout feature of this specific model is its deep matte black dial featuring the iconic adventurer layout. The distinctive layout features printed "Aged Lume" Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock alongside elongated matching baton indices, deep-filled with a warm, cream-coloured Swiss Super-LumiNova for a distinct vintage aesthetic. Big steel hands are filled with the same premium aged-style lume for exceptional low-light legibility. On the reverse, a solid screw-down caseback comes deeply embossed with the classic Nivada Antarctic gold medallion emblem. Inside beats the proprietary Swiss-made automatic Calibre Soprod P024. This customised 25-jewel mechanical calibre operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and features hacking seconds with a 38-hour power reserve. The watch comes paired with its original 20mm black leather strap that tapers into a branded buckle. This watch is sold with its original Nivada Grenchen box, swing tag and paperwork.

Personal Note

If you love the look and character of vintage watches but want something you can wear every day without the usual compromises, this is exactly the sort of watch I'd recommend. Nivada has done a fantastic job of capturing the charm of the original Antarctic models while updating everything that matters. You get the beautifully proportioned 38mm case, warm vintage-inspired lume, and classic explorer aesthetic, but with the reassurance of a sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, and a reliable modern Swiss automatic movement. For me, it's the best of both worlds. It has all the personality of a great vintage watch, yet the robustness and reliability to be worn and enjoyed every single day. About Nivada

Nivada was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, as early as 1879, but officially, 1926 appears to be its actual foundation, as in 1976, they celebrated their 50th anniversary. In 1939, Nivada built up a business deal with the New York-based Croton Watch Company to enable them to import and distribute Nivada watches within the US. This successful partnership would last for many years. Nivada Grenchen was imported and sold in the US under a number of different brand names, such as Croton Nivada, Croton Nivada Grenchen, and Croton. Between 1955 and 1956, in time for the 1957 International Geophysical Year, Nivada supported the US Navy “Operation Deep Freeze 1” expedition to the South Pole. They created a durable, waterproof, anti-magnetic watch, which they named “Antarctic”. 66 countries declared a year of science. With Admiral Byrd, the watch was worn and subjected to temperature fluctuations of 100 degrees above and 40 degrees below. It was dropped, hit, snowed on, and scraped on the ice; it never missed a beat. It is a testament to the ruggedness of the watch. During the 1960s and 70s, they were not allowed to use their Nivada name in the USA due to its phonetic similarity to Movado, so they used Nivada Grenchen instead. In 2018, two watchmaking entrepreneurs, Guillaume Laidet and Remi Chabrat, decided to revive the Nivada brand with its original legacy.
