The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Longines Heritage Classic Hodinkee L2.828.4.72.2 Limited Edition of 500 pieces made in collaboration with Hodinkee. A curvaceous 38.5mm satin brushed stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist with elegant tapered lugs. As part of their Heritage range, you can see the inspiration for the watch from their early sector dial wristwatches and the boom times of the 1920s and 30s. A lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensure a comfortable fit on your wrist; on the right side, a signed crown and the smooth bezel hold a box sapphire crystal AR coated above a two-tone silver and eggshell sector dial. Inside the silver outer ring, we have an outer minute track with black markers for the hours, at 6 o’clock, a small second's sub-dial with a thermally blued stick hand, concentric circular pattern, and clearly printed markers, elegant thermally blued stick hands in keeping with its vintage aesthetic. At 12 o’clock, the Longines motif “Chronometer” completes this vintage-inspired timepiece. On the reverse, a screw-down polished case back with the details of the watch around its edge and the number out of 500, Longines motif engraved in the centre, inside an automatic Longines Cal. L893.4, 27 jewels, 25,200 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its flowing Longines 19mm multi-linked polished stainless steel bracelet secured by a push button release signed folding clasp. This watch is sold with its original Longines box, travel pouch, spring bar removal tool and unsigned paperwork.

Personal Note

With all the recent changes Hodinkee has seen this model reminds me of a time now gone, likely forever, and what the future holds for Hodinkee is uncertain... But one thing is for sure, this Hodinkee Limited Edition of 500 pieces is one of their best releases to date! At 38.5mm this reference hits the sweet spot for most wrists, the restraint taken with the design and beautiful simplicity is perfect and the bracelet is truly wonderful. I would not hesitate to add one of these to your collection today, especially whilst the opportunity is there as they don't seem to pop up often!

The Brand

Auguste Agassiz founded Longines in 1832, and is one of the oldest registered watch brands. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The name Longines was present on their dials from this date, and the winged hourglass was engraved on their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880, the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later, their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher, the calibre 13.33z, was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for ten years. In 2009, they also became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH, who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG, who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. They were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
