The Watch
Here we have a 2023 IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XX Automatic IW328202. The Mark X line of watches can trace its heritage back to 1944 when it was issued to the military. The 40mm satin brushed stainless steel case curves over your wrist with a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 11mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. The soft iron inner case protects the movement from magnetic fields. On the right side, we have a signed screw-down "fish'' crown, used by IWC from the 1950s up to the 2000s; the Richmont Group in 2016 tried to register the fish logo but was refused by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property as they felt it was too close to the Christian Ichthys symbol, Richmont appealed the decision, and it was overturned in 2018, and so the "fish'' logo will be seen going forward. The smooth polished bezel holds a convex sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides above a matte black dial; an outer minute track is precisely executed with Super-LumiNova coated batons and Arabic numeral indices marking the hours, at 3 o'clock a date window, at 12 o’clock we have the characteristic large triangle and pips, slender rhodium-plated Alpha hands coated in Super-LumiNova are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. Printed at 12 o’clock, we have the IWC motif, and at 6 o’clock, "Mark XX Automatic" completes this vintage-inspired pilot watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with IWC engraved into it, and the polished plane in the centre, inside an automatic IWC Cal. 32111, 21 jewels 28,800 beats per hour, the movement is made up of 164 components and has a long power reserve. The watch comes paired with its EasX-CHANGE quick-release system 20mm IWC polished and brushed multi-linked stainless steel bracelet secured by a signed push-button deployment clasp and comes with its IWC presentation box, travel case and paperwork.
Personal Note
If you want a modern Pilot's watch from a brand with real history and heritage in the Pilot world, won't break the bank and isn't going to look like a dinner plate on your wrist, this Mark XX, reference IW328202, is definitely one to consider. The bracelet is a great touch and nice to have, especially as this watch looks great on a strap too, so both options are there! I would not hesitate to book an appointment and try this one on for yourself, but be warned, you will likely walk out with it on your wrist!
The Brand
In 1867, Florentine applied for a European passport with the dream of creating watches using the American system of Watchmaking. This system was taken from the Federal Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry. Where armaments needed high-precision interchangeable parts, this was perfect for watchmaking, and Florentine pioneered in introducing it to the Swiss. In 1868, Florentine and Charles Kidder ended up in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Originally called the company F. A Jones & Co, which was later changed to IWC International Watch Company. In 1876, Florentine returned to the USA, where he retired and sadly passed away in 1916. The spirit that he spent a lifetime perfecting carries on today in modern IWC watches.
