The Watch
Here we have a 2023 Hanhart Pioneer 417 ES 1954 Chronograph Manual with a 39mm polished and brushed stainless steel case; the ES (“Edelstahl”) is German for stainless steel, and the broad brushed flanks curve over your wrist with finely tapered flat-ended lugs, a modern interpretation of their first pilot's chronograph used by the German armed forces, produced from 1954 until 1963 it was known as the 417. A lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence; down the right side, we have the piston chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre. The coin-edged bezel with a splash of red at 12 o’clock painted in a scratch-resistant HyCeram holds a box-shaped sapphire crystal AR coated above a matte black bicompax dial. An outer minute track is precisely printed with the Arabic numeral indices coated in Super LumiNova marking the hours; at 3 o’clock, we have a 30-minute register, and at 9 o’clock, the small seconds register, each sitting slightly recessed, elegant syringe-style hands infilled with Super LumiNova and complemented by a tapered chronograph hand, at 12 o’clock the Hanhart motif “23 Jewels” and at 6 o’clock “Antimagnetic Shockproof” completes this traditional vintage-inspired Pilots bicompax chronograph. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge and an embossed Hanhart motif in the centre, inside a manually wound Sellita SW 510 M, 23 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the movement has hacking seconds. The watch comes fitted on its 20mm Bund-style strap with a signed buckle, and it comes with a Hanhart presentation box, leather travel case, and paperwork.
Personal Note
This is the perfect example of the value that can still be found in the market with brands that are, in my opinion, massively underrated! Just on the spec sheet alone, this watch represents great value, but when you take a look at the watch on and off the wrist it totally blows that price out of the water! I wouldn't hesitate to add this to your collection if you are interested!
The Brand
Hanhart was founded in 1882 by watchmaker Johann A. Hanhart. Situated in the small town of Diessenhofen near the River Rhine in Switzerland. In 1902, he relocated to Schwenningen in southern Germany, and Johann's son Wilhelm Julius joined the company in 1920. Innovation and efficient manufacturing techniques saw the introduction of a mechanical stopwatch in 1924. By 1926, the company had increased its product range to include wristwatches. In 1938, they produced the single-button “Calibre 40”, which became the company's mainstay. Expansion during 1939 had the company employing 200 staff. Hanhart chronographs were worn by pilots and naval officers with the production of the iconic “Calibre 41”, their first two-button chronograph. During the war years, production had to stop, and Wilhelm fled to neutral Switzerland and did not return to Germany until 1949. They entered the very first Baselworld in 1952. The Hanhart Calibre 42 was developed in 1957 and was used by the Luftwaffe of Germany in 1962. Celebrating their 175th Anniversary in 2007, they created the “Opus 41”, a hand-wound platinum chronograph equipped with an original Hanhart “Calibre 41”, which was limited to 39 watches. Today, they continue to create timepieces using the latest technology and materials while keeping to their founding principles.
