Description

Here we have a 2023 Glycine Airman Nº1 GMT 36mm Automatic (GL0372), which is based on the first Airman model launched in 1953 after British pilot and commander, Chat Brown, asked Glycine to produce a multiple time zone tool watch. The 36mm stainless steel case hugs the wrist, with polished and brushed surfaces that transition smoothly to crisp edges. A lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 11mm give the watch an excellent wrist presence. On the right side, at 3 o’clock, a screw-down crown to adjust the time and date. At 4 o’clock, a second crown that locks the friction-fit bezel in place. The bi-directional stainless steel friction-fit bezel features black 24-hour numerals deeply engraved. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a crisp white dial. 24-hour numerals surround the minute track and lumed baton indexes mark the hours, and at 3 o’clock, a date window is located. The arrow-shaped hour hand and slender minute hand are complemented by a tapered steel sweeping seconds hand and a black GMT hand. At noon, we have the Glycine motif “Airman” printed underneath, and at 6 o'clock, ‘Automatic’. On the reverse, a screw-down case back engraved with the details of the watch around its edge. Inside an automatic Sellita Cal. SW330-2, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, it has hacking seconds and quick-set date, an independently adjusted GMT hand in hourly increments when you pull the crown out to its second position and turn it unidirectionally. The watch comes fitted with its Glycine 22mm leather strap with a signed buckle and also comes with its Glycine presentation box, swing tag and papers.

About Glycine

Glycine, founded by Eugène Meylan, is a brand that has been around for a long time since 1914 (A rough time to start a company), but is most known for its Airman series, which debuted in 1953, initially designed for pilots with useful 24-hour analogue dials and rotating bezels with GMT functions. It was the first to offer this functionality. Worn by many servicemen during the Vietnam War, they also went into space in 1965 with Gemini 5 and astronaut Pete Conrad, who wore the Airman on his space suit, recording a new space endurance record of 7 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes and 14 seconds, beating the Russians by a couple of days. In 1967, they introduced their Crown motif to the world. In that same year, they produced the Glycine Combat watch, which uses the same hacking seconds mechanism as the Airman. Since 2016, they have been part of the Invicta Watch Group.
