The Watch

Here we have the stunning 2023 Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Glacier Blue with the angular 38.5mm expertly brushed and polished stainless steel case. Building on the success of their 2020 40.5mm Antarctique, the design team spent a year completely reengineering the case, the Drake Passage, named after the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, is a vital connection between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it lies between Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America, and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. The brushed flanks have a polished bevel edge that leads the eye to the distinctive stylised “C” lugs, a nod to their name, with a lug-to-lug length of 42mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm giving the watch a comfortable fit. On the right side, elongated crown guards protect a signed screw-down crown. The stepped polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal ARDur anti-reflective coated above a mesmerising Glacier Blue dial finished in Czapek's signature stamped “flinqué”, ‘Stairway to Eternity,’ a three-dimensional pattern on a two-dimensional surface, that magically plays with the light as you rotate your wrist. An outer minute track surrounds applied “12” and chamfer-edged trapezoid indexes filled with lume marking the hours, at 6 o’clock we have a date window colour matched to the dial and steel sword hands filled with lume are complemented by a red sweeping second hand. At noon we have the applied Czapek motif completing this incredibly sophisticated timepiece. On the reverse a screw-down sapphire exhibition case back showcasing the beautifully decorated inhouse automatic Czapek Cal. SXH5.01, 28 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, made up of 193 components including skeletonised bridges, a micro-rotor made from 100% recycled Platinum, sandblast finished and laser engraved. The watch comes paired with its brushed and polished 23.5mm Czapek stainless steel bracelet secured by a signed hidden double folding deployment clasp, all links included and its fitted 23.5mm blue rubber strap cut to fit a 7-inch wrist, and this watch is sold with its original Czapek presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

This is the first Czapek I have been fortunate enough to stock and I can tell you that it certainly won't be the last! The build quality and finishing are truly on another level and demanding your attention if you haven't handled or seen one in person, the fit and feel on the wrist are effortless and the price tag is truly deserving for what you get in this case. If you haven't had the chance to experience a Czapek in the metal, book an appointment and come see it for yourself.

The Brand

The fascinating story starts with Franciszek Czapek born in Semonice, Bohemia in 1811, he was a skilled watchmaker who later founded Czapek & Moreau, his first company, after the collapse of the Polish uprising he fled to Switzerland in 1832. In 1839, he met Antoine Norbert de Patek, and together they founded Patek, Czapek & Cie, which eventually dissolved six years later. Nevertheless, Czapek continued producing timepieces and founded Czapek & Cie with a new partner, Juliusz Gruzewski. Czapek's watchmaking skills were exceptional, and his company became renowned, having boutiques in Geneva, Warsaw, and Place Vendôme in Paris. He became a Purveyor to the Imperial Court and Watchmaker of His Imperial Highness, Prince Napoleon, marking his rise as one of the great watchmakers of his time. In 1871, Czapek mysteriously disappeared, and his legacy was eventually resurrected in 2012. A group of enthusiasts resurrected the Czapek company name and launched Czapek & Cie in 2015, allowing fellow watch lovers to invest in the company via an equity crowdfunding campaign. In 2019, the first boutique of Czapek & Cie was officially opened in Geneva, and in April 2022, the Company built its new factory in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, incorporating machining, milling, and polishing.
