Description

Here we have a 2023 Christopher Ward The Twelve Titanium Astral Blue, their first integrated sports watch since the C20 Lido of 2008. The design by Will Brackfield is inspired by the iconic Gerald Genta 1970s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus. The 40mm tonneau-shaped polished, sandblasted and brushed Grade 2 Titanium case flows over your wrist with crisp edges and sharp lines, for a distinctive quality aesthetic. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling protected by screwed-in crown guards. The star of the show is the polished and brushed 12-sided (dodecagonal) bezel with scalloped edges, sitting on a bevel-edged platform, holding an AR-coated sapphire crystal above a stunning 3-dimensional Astral Blue dial, made up of Christopher Ward twin-flag pyramids. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds applied diamond-polished and brushed dagger indexes filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1 to mark the hours. As you rotate your wrist, the dial, indexes and hands play with the light in a magical way. At 6 o’clock, a colour-coded date window, elegant diamond-polished and brushed hands filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1, and a tapered, sweeping second hand are complemented. At 12 o’clock, we have the applied Christopher Ward Twin-flag motif and “Automatic” printed at 6 o’clock, completing this dynamic and versatile sports watch. On the reverse, a 12-sided - dodecagonal screwed-down exhibition case back with 6 exposed screws is a nice tribute to the Royal Oak, inside an automatic Sellita Cal. SW300-1 COSC, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, a robust and reliable movement, with a bespoke “Colimaçoné” finishing (a type of twisting sunray graining). The rotor has a double Twin-flag engraving across it. The watch comes paired with a brushed and diamond-polished, quick-release 25mm Christopher Ward integrated Grade 2 Titanium bracelet with a gentle taper and signed butterfly clasp; all links are included, along with an additional fitted CW rubber strap. The watch also includes its original Christopher Ward box, COSC Certificate, and paperwork.

Personal Note

The Christopher Ward Twelve has been an unbelievable success for the brand, and we can all see why, especially with examples like this Titanium 40mm with the Astral Blue dial. The dial is mesmerising in both texture and colour, which follows on to the darker tone of the titanium and flowing integrated bracelet. If you have been considering a Twelve for some time, now is the time to snap this one up and get yourself a nice saving on RRP!

About Christopher Ward

In 2005, Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Christopher Ward embarked on a pioneering venture by founding the world’s first online-only watch brand. Their journey began in an unassuming setting—a converted chicken shed located on a picturesque farm in Berkshire, England. With a vision to revolutionise the watch industry, the trio launched two initial models: the C5 Malvern Automatic and the C3 Malvern Chronograph. Shortly after the brand's debut, a significant turning point came when Dave Malone, a lecturer from Tasmania with a passion for horology, spotted an advertisement featuring their watch powered by an ETA 2824–2 automatic movement. Intrigued by the product, Malone decided to purchase one with the intention of writing a critical review for Timezone.com, one of the world’s largest online watch forums. However, contrary to his original plan, Malone's review turned out to be incredibly favourable, declaring the watch to be the “best value mechanical watch in the world.” This affirmation was a game-changer for Christopher Ward, leading to a substantial surge in sales and solidifying the brand's reputation within the watch community. Recognising the potential for growth and the need for innovation, Christopher Ward sought to enhance their offerings. In 2008, after garnering significant acclaim from industry experts and collectors alike, the company began collaborating with Synergies Horlogères, a Swiss watchmaking firm based in Biel, Switzerland. Owned by Jörg Bader, Synergies Horlogères shared Christopher Ward’s vision for creating intricately designed movements and exceptional timepieces. The collaboration marked the beginning of a rigorous period of research, design, and development. After years of hard work, the fruits of their labor were revealed in 2014 with the introduction of their groundbreaking in-house movement, Calibre SH21. This remarkable achievement was not only notable for being a high-quality mechanical movement but also for being the first innovative and financially viable movement developed by a British watch brand in over half a century. The announcement sent ripples through the watch industry, further establishing Christopher Ward as a formidable player dedicated to redefining the standards of luxury and craftsmanship in horology.
