The Watch
Here we have a 2023 Christopher Ward The Twelve Glacier Blue with a polished, sandblasted and brushed 40mm stainless steel case. Its profile takes many of the design cues from the iconic Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, flowing seamlessly over your wrist thanks to the integrated bracelet. A lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm and a case thickness of 10mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence, and on the right side a screw-down embossed signed crown protected by low-profile crown guards. The stepped brushed and sandblasted bezel has a polished 12-sided scalloped edge, holding a sapphire crystal AR coated, above a dynamic three-dimensional stamped Glacier Blue dial. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds applied brushed and facet diamond polished dagger indexes filled with Super-LumiNova Grade X1 BL C1 marking the hours, at 6 o’clock we have a colour-matched date window, brushed and diamond polished sword hands filled with the same lume is complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. The various surfaces play magically with the light as you rotate your wrist. At 12 o’clock an applied Christopher double flag motif, and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” completes this striking versatile sports watch. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back with the details around its edge, inside an automatic Sellita Cal. SW200-1, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, a robust and reliable movement, with a bespoke “Colimaçoné” finishing (a type of twisting sunray graining), and the rotor has a double Twin-flag engraving across it. The watch comes paired with its 25mm marine grade stainless steel bracelet, innovative quick-release system and a signed concealed butterfly clasp and the watch also comes with its Christopher Ward presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
The Christopher Ward Twelve has been another stellar release from Christopher Ward and further propelled the brand within the collecting community, especially with the introduction of a smaller case size and a variety of dial options, there will be something for everyone. Here we have the Glacier Blue in 40mm and it is perfect on and off the wrist, I would not hesitate to add it to your collection.
The Brand
Founded in 2005 by Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Christopher Ward they started the world's first online-only watch brand. Launched from a converted chicken shed on a farm in Berkshire. Soon after the launch of the brand Dave Malone was a Tasmanian lecturer and watches expert. When he saw the press ad for a watch powered by an ETA 2824–2 automatic movement, he decided to buy one. He planned to write a critical review on the world’s largest watch forum, Timezone.com. Fortunately for Christopher Ward, his review was most complimentary. Stating the watch was the “best value mechanical watch in the world”. Sales immediately spiked and Christopher Ward became firmly established. After receiving such high praise in the industry and from collectors in 2008 they began work with assistance from a Swiss watchmaking company: Synergies Horlogères. Based in Biel, Switzerland. SH was owned and led by Jörg Bader who had the same vision Christopher Ward had on designing a new movement. After many years of design and development, July 2nd, 2014 saw the announcement to an astounding watch industry of their own in-house movement, Calibre SH21, the first commercially viable mechanical movement from a British watch brand in over 50 years.
