Description

Here we have a rare 2023 Bremont Hawking Limited Edition of 284/388 automatic featuring a 41mm stainless steel case made up of Bremont's innovative Trip-Tick construction, its case has a rubber sandwich construction, making it resistant to extreme external conditions and coated in scratch-resistant black DLC. The Bremont Hawking Limited Edition Collection, released in 2020, pays tribute to the late Stephen Hawking, the British scientist whose research on time revolutionised our understanding of the universe and beyond. The stylised undercut-shaped lugs have a lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a case thickness of 14mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. The screw-down decorated high-domed crown has deep knurling for grip. A polished, smooth bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal AR-coated above a dynamic sector-style matte black and grey dial. A white 360-degree chapter ring features the astronomical section marked as “Sunlight Travel”, which represents the time it takes for light to travel from the sun to reach the Earth's surface, approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds. Applied polished bevelled baton indexes filled with Super-LumiNova mark the hours, and the black etched spiral central disc represents a black hole, a phenomenon close to Hawking's heart as he studied them for many years. At 12 o’clock, we have the double big date framed window and at 6 o’clock, a 120-degree arc 30 seconds retrograde. Nickel syringe hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, and at 12 o’clock, we have the Bremont motif completing this astronomical celebration of Hawking. On the reverse, a screwed-down sapphire exhibition case back with the details of the watch around the edge and the black PVD-coated stainless steel plate is decorated with four wooden panels from a William & Mary oak sloping desk belonging to Hawking, a Muonionalusta meteorite sample and a serial number laser engraved on a piece of his 1979 research paper “The ‘nuts’ and ‘bolts’ of gravity.” The etched star constellation represents the night sky over Oxford on the night of Hawking's birth, including the title of his famous book “A Brief History of Time.” Inside an automatic Modified Calibre 11 ½''' BE-36AE, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, this modified movement has a base of the ETA 2836-2. The watch comes paired with a 20mm Bremont leather strap and signed buckle and is sold with its Original Bremont Box, travel case, accessories and Bremont Paperwork.

Personal Note

This Bremont Hawking has quickly become my favourite Bremont I have stocked yet, the design is beautifully executed and it fits the wrist perfectly, add to that the use of retrograde seconds and a large date, it truly stands out from the crowd. Limited to 388 this Hawking edition features part of his desk, meteorite, quotes and a wonderful pattern in the centre of the dial made to look like a blackhole! Bremont knocked this one out of the park in my opinion, so don't hesitate to snap it up and add it to your collection whilst you can!

About Bremont

Bremont was founded in 2002 by the brother's Nick and Giles English. Their watch designs are inspired by their love of flying and everything mechanical. During the 1990s while flying their 1930s biplane over France they got into trouble and had to land in a field. Not wishing to get the authorities involved, they were met by the farm owner who gave them and the plane shelter, it turned out he had flown during the war and was an engineer. The brothers, grateful to the kind farmer, promised him they would never forget him, his name was Antoine Bremont. In 1995 they were involved in an accident and sadly lost their father Dr Euan English while flying their World War II-vintage Harvard aircraft. His loss and their injuries drove the brothers to create a fitting legacy. Moving into their Manufacturing & Technology Centre in 2021. Innovation and producing technologically advanced timepieces have been an ever-expanding experience for Bremont. Their military connections through special edition watches and tireless work with Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion means their late fathers' legacy will continue to grow. They have a number of investors, including Bill Ackman and Hellcat LP, who have increased their investment since 2023. Nicholas English has remained as Secretary after resigning as Director, while his brother, Giles, has resigned as Director in May 2024 and left the company.
