The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Zenith Chronomaster Original 03.3200.3600/69.C902 with a curvaceous polished and radial brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, this is a faithful modern interpretation of the Zenith A386 chronograph that was introduced in 1969. A lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist, and polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges. Down the right side, we have piston-style chronograph pushers and a signed crown, a smooth polished bezel that holds a domed sapphire crystal above a dynamic tri-coloured sub-dial chronograph matte white dial. An outer 1/10th of a second scale chapter ring, one rotation every 10 seconds, surrounds a black 1/100th of a second scale each precisely executed, applied Rhodium-plated baton indexes have faceted edges infilled with Super LumiNova that play with the light as you rotate your wrist. At 3 o'clock a blue 60-second counter, at 6 o'clock a dark grey 60-minute counter and finally at 9 o'clock a light grey small second counter, between the 4 and 5 a framed date window, slender sword hands infilled with Super LumiNova complemented by bright red chronograph hand, at 12 o'clock we have the Zenith El Primero motif in its original flowing script, 36000 VPH printed underneath completes this striking vintage-inspired chronograph. On the reverse, a screwed-down exhibition case back showcasing the stunning automatic Zenith El Primero 3600, 35 jewels, a high-frequency column-wheel movement made up of 311 components and a skeletonised Zenith star rotor. The watch comes fitted on a vintage-style blue leather strap with a triple folding signed clasp and the watch comes with its Zenith presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

Zenith will forever be one of my favourite brands and this model is easily one of my all-time favourites from the modern releases! The watch looks perfect on the wrist, the design is a perfect throwback to the original and brings all that vintage charm but with modern reliability and build quality. It isn't often I would struggle to choose between a vintage and modern watch, but in this case, this reference may pull me away from a vintage model!

The Brand

Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH  (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements. Their most recognised movement is the El Primero; it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975 and was re-issued in 1986.
