The Watch

Here we have a collaborative 2022 Unimatic x Bait Polar White Automatic U4-BTS; BAIT Inc. is a lifestyle boutique based in Seattle and owned by Eric Peng Cheng. This limited edition 020/100 watch was offered in a raffle to US customers and is inspired by vintage field watches, as part of their “Inquisitive Explorer” line. The 41mm bead-blasted 316L stainless steel case sits on your wrist with thick drilled, flat-ended tapered lugs and Unimatic U4 engraved between them, and a lug-to-lug length of 48.5mm and a case thickness of 14mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a screw-down crown with a deep coin edge for grip and the characteristic Alchemical Sun cap, protected by chunky crown guards. A wide, stepped, smooth bezel has a chamfered edge and a sandblasted top surface. It holds a 2.8mm thick flat sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside. A crisp Polar white cross-hair dial has an outer minute rail track chapter ring surrounding black Arabic numeral hour markers. Brushed Unimatic ladder hands filled with Super-LumiNova C1 are completed by a reverse lollipop sweeping second hand; at 6 o’clock, we have the Unimatic motif and the Bait Inc logo printed underneath. On the reverse, we have a screw-down case back with the details of the watch around its edge, Unimatic x BAIT INC in the centre and U4-BTS 020/100 underneath, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. NH35A, 24 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, this workhorse movement has hand winding and hacking seconds for your convenience. The watch comes paired with two 22mm straps, a blue two-piece and a black heavy-duty NATO with sandblasted hardware and comes with its Unimatic tough case and paperwork.

Personal Note

There are very few Unimatic references I haven't stocked and this U4-BTS with Bait is one of them, so I am delighted to have now ticked another off the list. This 41mm reference in the classic U4 case which wears incredibly well and the crosshair white dial is wonderful, especially paired against the blue two-piece Unimaitc strap, super striking, but this dial would look against any strap. Limited to just 100 total, this is one of the more limited edition runs from the brand, so I would not hesitate to add it to your collection today!

The Brand

Made in Italy, Unimatic was founded by Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato. Both were industrial designers trained at Politecnico di Milano, where they shared a common interest and passion for wristwatches. They started Unimatic in 2015 with their first product, “Modello Uno.” Each piece is unique and hand-made in Milano, Italy.
