The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Seiko Prospex Padi SPB071J1 Special Edition Blue; this dive watch was designed with the assistance of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), a contemporary recreation based and inspired by the 1965 Seiko 62MAS, 6217-8000, their first professional dive watch, the 42mm stainless steel case has polished and satin-brushed surfaces that transition with crisp lines, curved flanks end with drilled flat ended lugs. The polished bevel edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 49.5mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side is a screw-down crown with knurling for extra grip. A blue anodised aluminium knurled-edged unidirectional bezel has a black ceramic dive insert with silver numerals. Its sapphire crystal is AR coated on the inside. The wave-patterned gradient dial gives the impression of black depths moving slowly into our oceans' lighter blue upper levels. The outer blue minute track surrounds applied brushed indexes marking the hours and coated in LumiBrite. At 3 o’clock, there is a date window with Cyclops magnification. When in the “12” positions, the arrow and red sword hands resemble a rocket, are coated in two colours of LumiBrite, and have a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock, we have the Seiko Prospex motif, and at 6 o’clock, “PADI Automatic Diver’s 200m” completes this rugged collaborative tool watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the details of the watch etched around its edge and the Seiko tsunami wave embossed in the centre is inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 6R15, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The movement has hand-winding and hacking functionality for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its original Seiko 20mm blue silicone strap and signed pin buckle, and it also comes with its Seiko presentation box, swing tag, and papers.
Personal Note
This Seiko Prospex Padi SPB071J1 is the perfect summer and holiday watch in my opinion, featuring the wonderful gradient blue dial that represents the depths of the ocean, a nice touch. Contrasting that is the black ceramic bezel and bold hands that suit the design perfectly, all in a case size and shape that will work surprisingly well on a wide variety of wrist sizes. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection, especially as we begin to see the illusive sunny weather in the UK!
The Brand
Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892, Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
