The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Oris ProPilot X 5 Days Calibre 400 01 400 7778 7153 with a 39mm brushed Titanium case that curves over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, chamfered edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 47mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, is a signed screw-down crown protected by crown guards. An attractive turbine-contoured smooth bezel holds a double domed sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside above a blue grain textured dial; an outer minute track surrounds baton indexes coated in Superluminova, marking the hours; at 6 o’clock, we have a date window and slender sword hands are filled with the same luminance and complemented by a sweeping tapered second hand. At 12 o’clock, the Oris motif and at 6 o’clock, "Propilot X" "5 Days" completes this minimalist pilot watch. On the reverse, a screw-down coin-edged exhibition case back, inside an automatic Oris Cal. 400, 21 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour; this movement is their 2nd in-house design with twin barrels and a 5-day power reserve, the use of silicon makes the movement antimagnetic, it has a skeletonised rotor and hacking seconds. The watch comes fitted on a brushed 19mm Titanium bracelet with chamfered sides and a signed seat-belt style folded clasp. The watch comes with its Oris presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
When this model was first announced I wasn't particularly drawn to it, however, now having had a few in stock I can safely say I am massively impressed with what Oris has managed to do for the price point and the design on the wrist is fantastic. This also feels like Oris is confirming a modern design language with this model and showing us collectors what they plan to do going forward. I like it when a brand is bold and confident in what they do and don't shy away from something new. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!
The Brand
Paul Cattin and George Christian founded Oris in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925, they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches, which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog headed a management buyout from Swatch Group in 1982. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
