The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Oris Aquis "New York Harbour" Limited Edition of 2000 pieces, made in collaboration with New York's “Billion Oyster Project” which is dedicated to rebuilding the Oyster population in the New York Harbour, set up in 2014 they are determined to repopulate the harbour by 2035. The 41mm stainless steel case curves over your wrist with stubby angular lugs that fit the integrated strap perfectly, a lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence, polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges. The stainless steel bezel has deep knurling for extra grip and a 60-minute dive insert in relief holding a sapphire crystal above a striking mother-of-pearl dial coloured in a swirling yellow-green which reflects the polluted colour of the Hudson River. An outer minute track has applied baton indexes scooped out and infilled with Super LumiNova marking the hours, at 6 o’clock a date window, sword hands are scooped out and infilled with Super LumiNova complemented by a lollipop counterweighted sweeping second-hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Oris motif and “Aquis Pressure Resistant 30 BAR / 300M printed at 6 o'clock complete this mesmerising dive watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with three oysters embossed in the centre and the New York Harbour limited number in relief around its edge, inside an automatic Oris Cal. 733, based on the Sellita SW200-1, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the movement contains 26 jewels. The watch comes fitted on a 10.5mm green Oris rubber strap and a folding deployment clasp that flows over your wrist for a comfortable fit and an additional 10.5mm polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed push button release deployment clasp and the watch comes with its Oris presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
The dial is everything on this watch for me, if you have tried on the 41mm Aquis you'll already know it is an insanely comfortable watch and fits most wrist sizes due to the case shape and lug design, but this dial blew me away the moment I saw it! The vibrant green mother of pearl is something to catch you when looking at the time, I found myself more interested in the dial every time I wanted to tell the time, so be prepared to be distracted owning this watch.
The Brand
Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog headed a management buyout from Swatch Group in 1982. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
