The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Kurono Tokyo Calendrier “Type 1” Green Automatic with a curvaceous 37.5mm mirror polished 316L stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist with elegant tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is a recessed pusher to change the month and a domed crown. A distinctive coin-edged bezel holds a box-shaped sapphire crystal which resembles the domed acrylic crystals of the past, a khaki/olive green dial has a subtle curve from the centre to the edge and is made up of two pressed-together layers to create a pleasing three-dimensional effect. An outer minute track is precisely executed with attractive raised Art Deco numerals for the hours. At 3 o’clock we have a recessed register with the months of the year, at 9 o’clock we have the recessed register for the days of the week, each delicately printed and decorated in Guilloche with high polished hands, at 6 o’clock we have the date window perfectly completing this triple date dress watch. Beautifully sculpted Kurono designed hands complemented by a tapered teardrop balanced sweeping second hand finishing this elegantly understated vision of Japanese creativity and sensibility. The brand motif is found at 12 o’clock. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the details of the watch in a ring as you would find on a vintage watch, inside an automatic Miyota Cal. 9122, 26 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, this premium movement has hacking seconds and quick-set date functionality for your convenience. To adjust the watch you pull the crown into its first position, rotate clockwise to adjust the date and anticlockwise to adjust the day, when you pull the crown to its second position you can adjust the time and stop the seconds. The watch comes paired with a 20mm black leather strap and a mirror-polished stainless steel pin buckle, and the watch comes with its Kurono Tokyo presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
The numerals are what instantly drew me to this release by Kurono Tokyo, which paired with the tone of green used is truly beautiful and all works perfectly on the wrist thanks to the 37.5mm case. Not to mention the function and useability of the application, surprisingly useful and looks great too! If you are a fan and haven't experienced Kurono Tokyo before, now is your chance to give them a shot, you won't be disappointed.
The Brand
Kurono Tokyo was founded by Hajime Asaoka in 2019, he is a Japanese watchmaker, one of only two members of AHCI (Académie horlogère des créateurs indépendants). Academy of independent watch artists, since 2015, renowned for very low production handcrafted watches that sell for upwards of £120,000. He decided to offer a more affordable timepiece that has the same DNA as his more bespoke watches; each watch is offered in limited numbers and in the case of the Grand Mori was immediately sold out. Production is controlled through Precision Watch Tokyo Co. Ltd, the very same company that Hajime Asaoka uses for his handmade creations.
