About D.Dornbluth and Sohn

D.Dornblüth & Sohn began its journey on a drizzly November evening in 1959, in the city of Chemnitz, then known as Karl-Marx-Stadt in central Germany. Dieter Dornblüth, a watchmaker living in Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt, built his first movement in a simple room. After finishing his studies, he became a master watchmaker and took over the watchmaking business of Elsa and Paul Beckmann in Kalbe, Saxony-Anhalt. Unfortunately, his aspiration to create his own Dornblüth calibre was left unfulfilled for many years, hidden away in a workbench drawer. On October 1, 1999, Dieter Dornblüth turned 60. Dirk Dornblüth, his son, a master watchmaker himself, gave him a stainless steel wristwatch that he had designed and made as a present. The watch's movement was based on the famous Glashütte calibre 60.3. That evening marked a significant moment as father and son began sketching the design for a potential base calibre on a paper napkin. Dornblüth watch movements show that you can bring new ideas to watchmaking without needing complex CNC machines. Their approach highlights the possibility for dedicated watchmakers to craft precision watches using traditional tools and techniques. The company experienced moderate growth in the years that followed, relocating to a new workspace in 2003. This move required further expansion in 2005 to accommodate the increasing demand. In 2008, the company restored the chronometer of the ship Gorch Fock I, and as a result, they released a limited-edition watch to celebrate the ship's 75th anniversary. By 2012, they introduced the "Quintus," centred around their fifth calibre, which marked their debut of an in-house movement.
